    Come see a large, colorful array of cut roses displayed at the annual New England Rose Society Show on June 15 from 12:00 – 3:00 at The New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill. The roses are judged and awarded ribbons and certificates by horticultural judges within the American Rose Society. Learn tips and tricks for easy rose growing and ask consulting rosarians your questions. You do not need to be a member of the New England Rose Society to enter roses. The New England Rose Society is affiliated with the American Rose Society and has been in existence for over 80 years. Their task is to inform and educate people about our national flower, the rose. This event is included with General Admission. We recommend purchasing your tickets online in advance to secure your preferred date. You can also buy tickets in person at the Garden. There will be two lectures. At 10:30 am, enjoy Easy Roses, Happy Gardens: A Stress-Free Introduction, and at 11:30, hear Friends and Foes of the Garden.

    Roses are a classic plant that can brighten up any garden or home. In this September 10 New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill program, Teresa Mosher provides tips for choosing hardy roses, fertilizing, rose dormancy, fall rose care, and winter protection. Photos from her locally revered Zone 5 garden in Methuen are incorporated into the PowerPoint presentation. Each participant will take home a signed copy of Teresa’s book A Year in my Rose Garden. filled with very helpful rose caring information, photos, information on ordering roses, a list of tools and supplies, her favorite books to read, rose terms, favorite roses and much more.

    Teresa Mosher is one of the leading garden and rose consultants in New England. She has over 30 years of experience as an avid gardener and cares for forty flower beds, 250+ roses, and over 2000 perennials, shrubs and trees in her garden. She is currently president of the New England Rose Society, a Horticulture Rose Judge, and Consulting Rosarian for the American Rose Society.

    David Cannistraro, past President of the New England Rose Society, will discuss a selection of rose types, and how to properly plant them, prune them through the growing season, and protect them in winter, on Thursday, May 19 at 7 pm in the Parkman Room of the Education Building at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley. He’ll also review best methods to deadhead and fertilize, and include a comparison of natural and over-the-counter sprays.

    A fun program to make rose growing easy, this program will be hands-on with potted rose demonstrations. Mass Hort members $12, nonmembers $20 – register online at www.masshort.org.

    The New England Rose Society is kicking off its 75 Anniversary year with a free presentation on Saturday, February 21, beginning at 10 am at the Methuen Senior Center, 77 Lowell Street in Methuen. The topic will be Organic Solutions to Common Garden Problems.

    Monique Egan of BioSafe will discuss simple, sustainable and effective techniques to use in the garden to produce beautiful healthy plants while protecting people, pets and the environment. She will include methods to prevent the spread of disease, manage weeds and control undesirable insects.

    As always, the presentation will be followed by “Ask the Experts” a Q & A session in which Consulting Rosarians will answer your specific questions about growing beautiful roses.

    Manuel Mendes, American Rose Society Certified Master Consulting Rosarian, will present a free seminar at Weston Nurseries, 93 East Main Street in Hopkinton, on Saturday, May 7, beginning at 9 am, on everything you need to know about roses.

  • Wednesday, March 16 – Sunday, March 20 – The Boston Flower & Garden Show

    Leave behind the gray days of winter and rejoice in the 2011 show, entitled A Burst of Color: Celebrating the Container Garden. Boston’s biggest horticultural happening provides the tools and inspiration to kick off the season in style.  Hours are 9 am – 8 pm Wednesday, March 16 through Saturday, March 19 and 9 am – 6 pm on Sunday, March 20.   A complete schedule of lectures and demonstrations will be posted at www.thebostonflowershow.com, but some highlights include a talk by Tovah Martin on The New Terrarium, a lecture by Ellen Ecker Ogden  on The Complete Kitchen Garden, and a charmingly entitled “Growing Your Groceries in Containers” by Teresa O’Connor and Jayme Jenkins.   The show plays host to amateur competitions as well, coordinated by The Massachusetts Horticultural Society along with The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts.

  • American Rose Society Four Month Free Trial Membership

    The American Rose Society is offering a four month Trial Membership to new New England Rose Society members who are not American Rose Society members.  Current New England Rose Society members who are not ARS members may take advantage of the trial membership for a fee of only $5.  In addition, the general public who are not members of a local society or the ARS can have a four month trial membership for only $10.  This (admittedly fairly confusing) offer is a great way to learn more about roses.  Information and sign up will be available at New England Rose Society meetings, or you may email Manny at bettybigboy@comcast.net, or check www.ars.org.  The next New England Rose Society meeting will be held tomorrow, Saturday, November 20, at 10 am at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, but you may receive information on future meetings by emailing info@rosepetals.org, or by logging on to www.rosepetals.org.  Did you catch all that?
