  • Sunday, November 6, 2:30 pm – 4:00 pm – Birds of the Americas

    Boston-based photographer Eduardo del Solar will be showing his nature photography in an exhibit entitled Birds of the Americas at Joppa Flats Education Center, 1 Plum Island Turnpike, Newburyport, Massachusetts from November 6 through December 31. The public is cordially invited to meet the artist at a free gallery reception on Sunday, November 6, 2:30-4:00 pm. A portion of all purchases made during the exhibit helps to support the Massachusetts Audubon Society’s Joppa Flats.

    Eduardo del Solar finds that spending time inside as a technology teacher in Boston contrasts nicely with his extracurricular interest: to get outside in nature, find wildlife, wait for the best light, and take photographs. Born and raised in Lima, Peru, del Solar has been working since 2007 on a photographic series of American birds in such locations as his native country, Costa Rica, the Galapagos Islands, Canada, and, of course, New England. He is currently working with Goldenrod, an environmental agency at Plymouth Long Beach, where he is photographing birds through an entire year of seasonal changes. “As a photographer, providing artistic and technical renditions of species across the Americas is my primary goal. For this exhibit I have included a few endemic species from these places I have visited as well as some of my favorite images from the Goldenrod project,” says del Solar.

  • Saturday, August 13, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm – Build a Stone Trough Planter

    Learn how to make planters that look like old stone troughs out of a mixture called “Hypertufa”. In Europe, plants are often grown in stone troughs-ancient vessels once used for watering livestock. The craggy look of the hewn stone perfectly complements herbs, flowers and most especially rock garden and drought tolerant plants. Planting in troughs also raises the height of plants in the garden and segregates them from their larger neighbors. Learn how to design and produce unique Hypertufa troughs for your garden. Students will be guided through the process and will take home several troughs of their own creation. Debra Pope is an artisan working with Hypertufa medium to construct artistic custom troughs. Her troughs are sold throughout the northeast including Tower Hill Botanic Garden, Berkshire Botanical Garden and Stonecrop. Her popular workshops are offered at botanical gardens and for garden clubs in New England.  The workshop will be held Saturday, August 13, from 10 – noon at the Berkshire Botanical Garden, 5 West Stockbridge Road in Stockbridge, and costs $45 for BBG members, $50 non-members, plus a $15 materials fee.  For more information, log on to www.berkshirebotanical.org.   • Thursday, January 27 – Sunday, January 30 – Flora in Winter

    The Worcester Art Museum comes alive Thursday, January 27 through Sunday, January 30, 2011 for the annual Flora in Winter celebration! Worcester Art Museum and Tower Hill Botanic Garden present Flora in Winter, the premier floral design event of the year. Skilled artisans from across New England create clever, provocative interpretations at both venues, interpreting this year’s theme “Moments in Time.”

  • Saturday, November 6 – Fall Chrysanthemum Show Opening

  • Saturday, October 23, 10 a.m. – 3:00 pm – Orchid Growing Clinic

    Once again Historic New England will feature orchids at the Lyman Estate Greenhouses in Waltham, Massachusetts on Saturday, October 23 at 10 a.m.  Bring up to three orchid plants for evaluation by experienced horticulturists. Get advice on maintaining healthy blooming plants. Other services offered include repotting and educational handouts about orchids. Books, pots, and growing supplies are for sale.   • Saturday, October 16, 11:00 am – 4:00 pm – Cogswell’s Grant Pumpkin Day

    Historic New England hosts the Cogswell’s Grant Pumpkin Day at Cogswell’s Grant in Essex, Massachusetts, from 11 – 4 on Saturday, October 16.  Celebrate the arrival of fall. Enjoy horse-drawn wagon rides, choose pumpkins to decorate, compete in a pumpkin pie-eating contest, do crafts, play games, and try cider pressing. Enjoy hot mulled apple cider and homemade pumpkin pie.   • Friday, October 8 – Sunday, October 10, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Fall Orchid Sale

    Hundreds of orchid plants are for sale, including many hard-to-find varieties. Visit these antique greenhouses and enjoy gorgeous floral colors, shapes, and scents. Among the many varieties on display and for sale are cattleyas, laelias, oncidiums (below), Paphiopedilum, and Phalaenopsis. Their long lasting and showy blooms make orchids a dramatic addition to any indoor environment and this adaptable species can be grown in a variety of home conditions.   • Saturday, August 28, 10:00 a.m. – Fern Identification Workshop

    Field trips are a long standing tradition of the Connecticut Botanical Society.  They provide an opportunity to learn about plants and habitats from some the area’s most knowledgeable botanists, and an opportunity to share your own knowledge with others.  The trips also add to the bank of knowledge of New England flora.  On each field trip, a list is made of all plant species identified, and this list becomes part of the Society’s records.  The Connecticut Botanical Society encourages the gardening public to participate in this Fern Identification Workshop at 55 Harvest Lane in Glastonbury, Connecticut, led by Casper Ultee, Past President of CBS.  Although many ferns are readily identified, some are easily confused with similar species.  This workshop will focus on those and others that are less common.  You may bring your own problem specimens (fronds only, no complete plants, please).   This workshop is limited to ten participants, and pre-registration is required by contacting the leader in advance at 860-633-7557. For field trips, wear sturdy footwear and bring a lunch.  Sunscreen and insect repellant are also recommended.  For plant identification, you may wish to bring a field guide(s), a hand lens, and a small notebook.  Familiarity with plant taxonomy is helpful, but not required.    Free to CBS members.  Non-members must pay a $15 fee, which includes a one-year membership in CBS, and entitles you to join future trips this season at no additional cost.  For more information and directions, call Casper Ultee at the number above, or log on to www.ct-botanical-society.org.

  • Saturday, August 14, 8:30 a.m. – New England Carnivorous Plant Society Cookout
