  • Thursday, August 12, 11:00 am – Creating a Butterfly-Friendly Environment

    Since you will already be at Highfield Hall, 56 Highfield Drive in Falmouth on Thursday, August 12 listening to Warren Leach, stick around, since at 11:00 am  Judy Larocque, Garden Tutor, Judy’s Garden, will speak on Creating a Butterfly-Friendly Environment. Judy’s horticultural education began at the New York Botanical Gardens.  Since then she has worked at a number of well-known garden centers, including Lexington Gardens and Mahoney’s Garden Center, and teaches on gardening topics regularly at both the Falmouth and Sandwich Community Schools.  She will offer helpful tips on identifying butterflies in your back yar  – how to attract them and how to help them propagate. Judy will also cover the three part environment they need to thrive: for the catepillar stage, for nectar and rest, and for laying eggs.  Be prepared to be surprised as to which plants are most amicable to butterflies for each of these stages.  $5 suggested donation.  Log on to www.highfieldhall.org for more information.

  • Tuesday, October 20, 6:30 – 9:30 – Landscaping and Decorating with Bulbs

    Explore a variety of colorful bulb options you can plant now for a spring display for the mixed flower border or for indoor forcing. You will learn the secrets to growing bulbs outdoors, including when and how to plant, designing for color combination, and resources for quality bulbs. We’ll also explore options for bulbs in shady spots. We’ll go beyond tulips and daffodils to explore bulb varieties that will add interest to your garden, and expand the bulb blooming season with lasting color. Plan this fall for a colorful spring, and then just sit back and enjoy the show.  The class is sponsored by Brookline Adult and Community Education, costs $38, and is taught by Peter Medaglia, owner of Gold Medal Gardens, who traded-in a career in marketing to start his own landscape design and construction firm specializing in intimate urban and suburban gardens.   • Thursday – Saturday, August 6 – 8 – Annual Meeting of American Conifer Society

    Entitled “Great Gatsby on Long Island”, the 2009 American Conifer Society will present its 2009 Annual National Meeting in Hauppauge, New York, August 6 – 8.  The Northeastern Region is excited to host this year’s ACS National Meeting on Long Island. The emphasis will be the Great Gatsby themed estates of Long Island. Each of these estates were created with lavish gardens and magnificent landscapes. The estates contain their own pinetum which feature mature conifer specimens as well as dwarf conifer gardens. Participants will also visit  perhaps the finest public garden in the United States: the New York Botanical Gardens in the Bronx, New York. The NYBG features the Benenson Collection of Dwarf and Unusual Conifers plus a number of the conifer discoveries of the late Dr. Sid Waxman. Fred Soviaro, Director of the Hofstra University Arboretum, will speak on “The Gardens and Conifers of Hofstra.” Vinny Simeone, Director of  The Planting Fields, will present “A Look at the Coe Family and Their Estate.” There will also be a session on “Conifer Gardens of Great Britain and the Netherlands.” Other tours will be of Old Westbury Gardens, 88 acres of formal gardens, tree-lined walks, grand allees, ponds, statuary, and architectural follies, Hofstra University, and the newly renovated Dwarf Conifer Garden at the Planting Fields.  Silent and live plant auctions will be held at the banquet dinner Friday nightt.  On Saturday, two tours, New York Botanical Gardens and Bayard Cutting Arboretum, will conclude with a Caribbean cookout.  The meeting site and accomodations will be the Hyatt Regency Long Island, 1717 Motor Parkway, Hauppauge, New York.  For more information and to register, log on to www.conifersociety.org.
