  • Wednesday, May 23, 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm – What’s So Special About Newbury Street?

Of course you know that BostonÂ’’s beloved boutique district has long had a devoted local and regional following. YouÂ’’re aware that its many restaurants and sidewalk cafés add to the appeal. And you’Â’ve probably noticed that it has acquired a distinctly international accent in recent years, as numerous European retailers have opened branches here. But do you know what made Newbury Street such an attractive spot for shopping, dining and people-watching in the first place? On this Wednesday, May 23rd tour, beginning at 4 pm,  we’Â’ll explore the historic origins and visual qualities that have led to its present vitality, and which will continue to shape its vibrant future. Tour will be led by William Young, Senior Preservation Planner, Back Bay Architectural Commission (1991-present). Reception to follow at CafeTeria, 279A Newbury Street.

Free and open to the public. As no more than 30 participants may be accommodated, pre-registration is required. Contact megmc@bostonbackbay.com before May 16 to reserve a spot. Meeting place confirmed at time of reservation. Contact William.Young@cityofboston.gov for more information.

  • Friday, September 10, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Twilight Garden at Gallery NAGA

Arthur Dion and Meg White, Directors of Gallery NAGA invite Garden Club of the Back Bay members to an opening reception with photographer Mary Kocol this Friday, September 10, from 6 – 8 at the Gallery, 67 Newbury Street, Boston.  They were struck by the similarity of the titles to our annual fund raising party in June and the September exhibition by the artist, and feel the affinities run even deeper.  The show will be on view through October 2, so all are invited to stop by during the run of the show and see these beautiful photographs.  Complete images can be seen on their website, www.gallerynaga.com.  Below is Conifers, October, Arnold Arboretum, Boston, 2009 archival inkjet photograph (1/10) 23×23″  We thank Arthur and Meg for their hospitality.

  • Rain Cancellation of Garden Club Table at NABB Street Sale

Once again, heavy rain and a forecast of lightning has scuttled our plans to participate in the Neighborhood Association of the Back Bay’s Street Fair, originally scheduled to take place today, October 3, on the Dartmouth Street Mall between Newbury Street and Commonwealth Avenue.  We haven’t heard whether or not NABB and other vendors are going forward with their plans (we suspect not), but thank our volunteers, especially Committee Chair Maureen O’Hara, for their work preparing for today’s event.

  • Saturday, September 12, 10 – 5 – NABB Fall Street Sale

On Saturday, September 12th, from 10:00am to 5:00pm, NABB will hold its Annual Fall Street Sale, our local community yard sale, on Dartmouth Street Mall between Newbury Street and Commonwealth Avenue (at Alley 434).  The Garden Club of the Back Bay will be represented with a table, and visitors will be able to pick up Membership Brochures, see displays of some of the many Garden Club of the Back Bay projects we execute and fund, purchase totes, aprons, and bulbs, and pre-order our justly famous Holiday Wreaths.  We will also have pictures and ordering information for the beautiful iron tree fences you see throughout the neighborhood.  If you’d like to arrange for pruning of your front yard tree, we can take that information, too.  Please stop by and say hello.
