  • Thursday & Friday, August 18 & 19, 6:00 pm – 11:00 pm, and Saturday & Sunday, August 20 & 21, 12:00 noon – 11:00 pm – Fisherman’s Feast of the Madonna Del Soccorso di Sciacca

    The Fisherman’s Feast is an annual event that began in Boston in 1910 and is based on a tradition that goes back to the 16th century in Sciacca, Sicily. The Feast is based on the devotion of the fishermen from Sciacca to the Madonna del Soccorso (Our Lady of Help). When the fishermen immigrated to America in the early 1900’s, they brought their traditions with them. Today’s Feast is much the same as it was over 100 years ago with lights adorning the street and the smell of sausage in the air. The current Feast is organized by the descendants of those original immigrants and still includes a procession of the Madonna through the streets of the North End. Events take place on Hanover & Battery Streets, and are free and open to the public. Thursday August 18 begins with the Blessing of the Fishing Waters at Christopher Columbus Park. On Sunday, the Grand Procession begins at 1 pm, and at 8 there is the Flight of the Angel Fleet at Lewis and North Streets. For more information visit www.northendboston.com.

  • Thursday, August 4, 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm – Dancin’ in the Park!

    As part of their 15th Anniversary Celebration, Friends of Christopher Columbus Park presents Dancin’ in the Park! on Thursday, August 4 from 6 – 9. This will be a fun evening of outdoor dancing with great music provided by “Past and Present,” aka DJs Bob Remick and Gary Wilson. The party will take place around the fountain area near Tia’s on the Waterfront at 200 Atlantic Avenue. We will have water, cookies and snack bars as well. Free.

    All ages and abilities welcome.  The DJs will take requests, so you can boogie to your favorite tunes. Come and dance, or just listen to the music and enjoy a beautiful evening on the waterfront. And don’t forget to invite your friends.

    This all-volunteer non-profit organization was founded in July 2001 by a small group of North End/Waterfront business people and residents to encourage, enhance and coordinate efforts of the local community and the Department of Parks and Recreation of the City of Boston to promote, improve, and maintain Christopher Columbus Park.   • Sunday, September 21, 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Sunday Afternoon at the Armenian Heritage Park

    Join the Friends of the Armenian Heritage Park on Sunday, September 21 from 3 – 4 for a meet and greet for all ages.  The Park is located on the Rose Kennedy Greenway, between Faneuil Hall Marketplace and Christopher Columbus Park.  Emack & Bolio’s will be there, thanks to E & M’s Stewart Kagel, and there will be live music courtesy of Mal Barsamian on oud, Leo Janikian on clarinet, Kenny Kalajian on guitar, and Jay Baronian on dumbeg. Mal Barsamian is one of the most gifted Armenian-American musicians working today. His wealth of musical knowledge extends to classical as well as Middle Eastern music.  Barsamian performs on bouzouki, oud, clarinet, guitar, violin, and dumbeg. He has the same vitality on the instruments as he does on his most well-known instrument, the clarinet. At 2:30 there will be a game for kids with a chance to win Boston Duck Tour tickets for four, with the help of Boston Duck Tour’s Bob Schwartz.  Bob Lobel, co-host of Sports Legends New England, will act as Emcee.  Come early to walk the Greenway, ride the carousel, visit Christopher Columbus Park, the North End, Faneuil Hall Marketplace, and the Waterfront.  If you have any questions, email info@armenianheritagepark.org.

    Join the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy and the North End community for the annual lighting of the great Elm Tree and the illumination of the pergola on Thursday, December 6, beginning at 6 pm. Celebrate the winter season and enjoy bell ringing by the North End Music & Performing Arts Center. The North End Parks are located between New Sudbury and Hanover Streets in, naturally, the North End.

  • Thursday, July 29, 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm – Bikes@Night

    Join the Boston Preservation Alliance members as they team up with Urban AdvenTours to ride the night away and explore Boston on two wheels.  The Bikes@Night tour will show you the city as the sun goes down and the lights come up, focusing on Boston’s beautiful and historic waterfront. Watch the sun set over Boston Harbor, hear about architecture and history, and enjoy a delightful summer night in Boston.  The ride will include:
    • Long Wharf: once the busiest pier in the busiest port in America during early colonial times and now home to the New England Aquarium.
    • The Rose Kennedy Greenway: the 1.5-mile-long long series of parks and public spaces that now exists where the elevated Central Artery once stood.
    • Fan Pier: the historic location of railway lines that linked Boston to the rest of the country and where you can now take in the modern architecture of the Institute of Contemporary Art and the Moakley Court House.
    • The North End: the city’s oldest residential community full of late 19th and early 20th century architecture (and arguably the best restaurants!)

    Ride departs from Urban AdvenTours, 103 Atlantic Avenue and participants should arrive by 5:30 p.m. for a 6 p.m. departure.  Cost: This event is $30 for Alliance members/$37 for non-members and includes: bike, helmet, water bottle, and tour guide.     Capture Boston’s picturesque parks during this inaugural outdoor summer amateur photography workshop series, beginning Tuesday, July 13. The location is the Copps Hill Burying Ground in the North End (44 Hull Street, Boston.) Be the first to learn the tricks of taking a perfect photograph. The free evening 6:00 p.m. workshops are geared toward adult photographers. Bring your own digital or film camera and pre-registration is encouraged. Selected participants’ shots may be viewed on the City of Boston Parks Department’s fan page on Facebook and will be featured at an exhibit at Boston City Hall.
