  • Tuesday, March 27, 6:45 pm – Clematis: The Queen of Climbers

    The Norwood Evening Garden Club will host clematis specialist and master gardener Cheryl Monroe on Tuesday March 27, at 6:45 p.m. at the Carriage House behind the First Baptist Church, 71 Bond Street, Norwood.

    Ms. Monroe grows more than 50 varieties of clematis, what she calls the queen of the climbers up, through and around her garden in the sun, shade, in the ground and in containers.

  • Tuesday, February 28, 6:45 pm – Grow What You Eat

    The Norwood Evening Garden Club will host biologist, gardener, writer, and entertaining storyteller, Roger Swain, on Tuesday February 28, at 6:45 p.m. at the Carriage House behind the First Baptist Church, 71 Bond Street, Norwood. The public is invited to attend. A $10.00 donation is requested.

    Recognized by millions of people as the man with the red suspenders, Mr. Swain is the former host of the popular PBS-TV horticulture show, The Victory Garden, and long-time science editor of Horticulture magazine. He will speak on his favorite topic, vegetable gardening, encouraging listeners to Grow What You Eat. Mr. Swain has penned four books on gardening for which he received the American Horticultural Society’s award for writing. He is also the recipient of a Massachusetts Horticultural Society gold medal for his power to inspire others.

    When he is not writing, lecturing or being filmed for television, Mr. Swain can be happily found working in his own gardens, either at his home outside Boston or at his farm in southern New Hampshire.   • Saturday, May 7 – Three Plant Sales of Interest

    The Boxborough Garden Club will host a plant sale, raffle and bake sale on Saturday, May 7, from 8:30 – 11:30 am on the Boxborough UCC Community Church Lawn, 723 Massachusetts Avenue in Boxborough.  On the same day, from 9 – 1, the New England Unit of the Herb Society of America will host its 31st Annual Great Herbs & Heirloom Plant Sale at Elm Bank Horticultural Center’s Field, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley, where they will sell culinary, fragrance, remedy herbs, heirloom tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, eggplants, and the herb of the year – horseradish!  You may also buy hand planted container and fairy gardens for Mother’s Day gifts, and there will be free chives and johnny jump-up plants for the kids.  For more information, log on to www.neuhsa.org.  The Norwood Evening Garden Club will be holding its Annual Plant Sale at Hawes Pool Park in South Norwood, from 9 – 1, and they say this is an excellent opportunity to purchase a gift for Mom as well as plants for your own garden.  Perennials from member gardens will be offered at reasonable prices, most under $10.  Some annuals, herbs, single geraniums, patio pots, and hanging baskets will be featured – call 508-668-4039 for more information.  All sales from these three events will promote civic projects, so find your spot and bring cash or checks, rain or shine.

     

  • Tuesday, February 22, 6:45 pm – Principles of English Garden Design

    The Norwood Evening Garden Club will host Frederick Rice, a dynamic, multi-faceted speaker who brings a lifetime of experience in horticulture, theater and travel to audiences throughout the northeast and Europe, on Tuesday, February 22, at 6:45 at the Carriage House behind the First Baptist Church, 71 Bond Street, Norwood.  His lecture is entitled Principles of English Garden Design.

    To many, English gardens appear to lack a design focus, but nothing could be further from the truth. Whether you’re thinking of creating an English garden or want to be inspired by these design principles to enhance your current garden, you will want to attend Mr. Rice’s presentation. His lectures draw from years of living in Britain and St. Kitts in the British West Indies, consulting and hands-on experience in horticultural design. Mr. Rice, a past speaker at Garden Club of the Back Bay meetings, is a native of Manchester-by-the-Sea, and recently moved to Rome, New York where he continues to lecture on horticultural topics and consult on garden design projects while renovating his home and building an extensive botanical garden.
