  • Friday, November 28 – Sunday, January 4 – Holly Days: Winter Reimagined

    If you have come to Holly Days at Tower Hill Botanic Garden in the past, you know that volunteers come up with some clever, creative displays.  The emphasis is on natural materials.   The 2014 theme is Winter Reimagined, a wonderfully free and open-ended concept sure to inspire and entertain.  Wander through glittering indoor displays and illuminated trees and shrubs in the Orchard, Entry, Lawn and Winter Gardens.  A giant Bromeliad tree, hundreds of poinsettias, more than 1,500 hand-crafted ornaments and over six miles of lights make this a unique holiday experience for all ages.  The Garden is making it even easier to experience the winter magic with special extended hours during Holly Days.  Buildings, grounds, The Shop at Tower Hill, and TWIGS Cafe will be open Wednesday and Thursday evenings until 9 pm, and all other days from 9 – 6.  Tower Hill is open seven days a week during Holly Days, including Mondays.  Tower Hill Botanic Garden is located at 11 French Drive in Boylston, Massachusetts.  For directions, and a complete list of activities including live music and children’s events, log on to www.towerhillbg.org.

  • Wednesdays, July 14, 21 & 28, 2:00 – 3:30 pm – Flower Arranging

    The Cambridge Center for Adult Education is pleased to announce a series of flower arranging seminars with the acclaimed Cass the Florist.  Ever wonder how to turn a bouquet of flowers from the grocery store or flowers from the garden into an elegant centerpiece? This course will teach you how to create your own beautiful flower arrangements. You will learn the essential elements and principals of floral design while creating three different arrangements. You will learn how to care for flowers to achieve long-lasting freshness, and how to select appropriate containers and flowers for the look you want to achieve. Seasonal flowers and foliage will be used and seasonal themes emphasized. This is a hands-on course and at the end of each class you will have a stylish arrangement to take home to enjoy or give as a gift. A materials fee of $45 (cash or check only) is payable at the first class. Limited to 10.

  • Thursday, November 2, 7:00 pm – From the Farm to Your Plate

    The Museum of Science will sponsor a lecture on Thursday, November 12 beginning at 7 pm entitled From the Farm to Your Plate.  What we eat and drink has significant ecological consequences.  Where does our food come from and how does it get to us?  What are “food miles”?  Learn how the production, packaging, and transportation of food affect our environment.  Consider how food is produced and transported in other countries and what we can do to reduce the environmental impact of food packaging and consumption on the local and national level.  Free.  For more information, call 617-589-4250, or email forumrsvp@mos.org.

  • Monday, October 26, 9:30 am – noon – Volunteer Training at the Wellesley College Botanic Gardens

    The Wellesley College Botanic Gardens depends on its many Friends of Horticulture volunteers to assist the WCBG  in gardening tasks, host campus events, lead tours, work on special research projects, and share their enthusiasm with other plant lovers.  Volunteer meetings are the third Monday of the month, and the first volunteer training session of 2009/2010 will be held at the Greenhouses on October 26, with additional training dates of November 2, 9, 16, and February 1 and 8, 2010.  Training for the Arboretum begins March 20, 2010.  Additional information can be found at www.wellesley.edu/WCFH, or by emailing horticulture@wellesley.edu, or calling 781-283-3094.  Sometimes you just want to hang out in the Greenhouses!

  • Mondays, November 2, 9, 16, 30, and December 7, 6:30 – 8:30 pm – A Garden in Your Mind’s Eye: Developing Your Vision with Tony Bernstein

    Incorporating philosophy, aesthetics, economics, and theories as well as practicalities, it’s no wonder that planning a garden design can overwhelm. In this class, designer Tony Bernstein, Principal at SLDA Landscape Design Associates, will teach about core design principles, but will also coach you to clarify what you desire of a garden. Through exercises and discussions, he’ll encourage you to be introspective to develop design concepts that are reflective of your personality and lifestyle. Melding your inner visions with external factors, you will begin to develop a satisfying and cohesive garden design. In this class you will explore design foundations, philosophies, aesthetics, sensibilities, and practicalities. You will finish the class with rough sketches and plenty of ideas to develop during the winter. Fee: $140 Arnold Arboretum of NEWFS member, $168 nonmember.  Offered in collaboration with the New England Wild Flower Society.
