    Get rid of the paint, the aerosol cans, the chemicals, the works, on either Saturday, October 31 at the UMass Boston Boston Harbor Campus, 100 Morrissey Blvd. or on November 21 at the Boston Public Works Yard, 315 Gardner Street in West Roxbury.  Log on to www.cityofboston.gov/publicworks/recycling/hazardouswaste.asp for directions and a full list of items accepted. No televisions or computers, please, and bring proof of residency with you.

  • Saturday, October 31, 3:30 – 5:30 pm – Clarendon Street Playground Halloween Party

    Join your friends and neighbors for the Annual Halloween Party on Saturday, October 31, from 3:30 – 5:30 pm.  Pizza, drinks, and glow necklaces will be available for purchase.  Entertainment and variety shows will be provided by Jenny the Juggler.Hayrides around the neighborhood, photography by Aurora De Luca, and trick or treating safe house lists will be available as well.

    Marlborough Street between Berkeley and Fairfield Streets, as well as Dartmouth and Clarendon Streets between Commonwealth and Beacon, will be closed to traffic from 3:30 pm – 9:30 pm.  Parked cars may stay there during this time, but they cannot be moved.

    Michael Dosmann, Curator of Living Collections, Arnold Arboretum, will speak on Saturday, Oct 31 , 1:00–2:30pm, at the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain.
    As the weather changes and leaves drop, focus your attention on bark, an often-overlooked ornamental feature of woody plants. The Curator of Living Collections is mad for bark!   • Saturday, October 17, 9:30 – 12:30 – Essential Elements of Botanical Drawing: Getting It Right

    Are you a beginner or even an advanced artist in need of a basic approach to drawing? Jump-start your drawing skills in this five session class with Jeanne Kunze, illustrator and Instructor in Art History and Studio Art. The techniques she teaches are designed to develop accurate observation and definition of shape–both essential to artistic renderings, botanical or not. Learn to represent plants through specialized observation and sketching exercises and techniques for making proportional measurements, depicting foreshortened petals, flowers, and leaves and representing perspective and compositional balance. Jeanne will help you develop your illustration skills through class demonstrations, exercises, and individual teaching moments.   • Saturday, October 3, 2:00 – 4:00 pm – Birds of the Americas III Exhibit Opening

    Providing artistic and technical renditions of species across the Americas is the primary goal of local educator and photographer Eduardo del Solar. For this exhibit at Mass Audubon’s Boston Nature Center, 500 Walk Hill Street, Mattapan, he has captured images of endemic species from South America in their natural habitat. This year Eduardo has visited the islands of San Cristobal, Santa Cruz and Española in Galapagos as well as the Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve in mainland Ecuador. Coastal birds from Lima and images of northern visitors to New England are part of this exhibit as well. Meet the artist and enjoy refreshments!   • Three Corn Maze Opportunities

    Have you ever walked through a corn maze?  This autumn, three fantastic opportunities await, one in Sterling, one in Sunderland, and one in Ipswich.     Mega Maze Corn Maze — Sterling

    Every year brings a whole new puzzle, theme, and challenge.  Davis’ Mega Maze features more bridges than any other field maze in the world and the only double-decker bridge. There is more than one solution to the Mega Maze and there are several different levels of intensity at which the maze can be completed.     Mike’s Corn Maze at Warner Farm – Sunderland

    The 2009 Maze celebrates the 173rd anniversary of the conclusion of the voyage of The HMS Beagle. The maze features the famed British naturalist Charles Darwin with his penetrating gaze chiseled out of solid corn. Darwin is pictured with an assortment of the Galapagos finches whose habitats were isolated volcanic islands. Put on your farm appropriate footwear and come for a nature walk along miles of corn-lined trails. No pets. Location: Warner Farm, 25 South Main Street.
