    Learn all about Tower Hill at the Annual Tower Hill Botanic Garden Winter Open House on Sunday, November 14, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.  Free admission.  See the newest additions to the Garden at the official opening of the new Winter Garden, and the new Limonaia.  Tour these unique, exciting garden spaces, with flowing water fountains and beautiful plantings designed specially for winter interest.   • Sunday, May 2, 11:00 am – 5:00 pm- Castle Hill on The Crane Estate Open House

    In celebration of spring, The Trustees of Reservations invite you to the 2nd Annual, FREE Spring Open House at Castle Hill on the Crane Estate to enjoy a day of fun. Plant a seedling and help them recover some of the hundreds of trees lost in the recent nor’easter. Pack a picnic and they’ll provide lawn games such as croquet and bocce ball, a Maypole dance, self-guided tours of the Great House and grounds, refreshments, and more. Please feel free to bring friends and family, but leave furry friends at home.

    The Open House thanks the public for its support of The Trustees’ ongoing restoration of the Castle Hill grounds, which in recent years has included historic plantings and restorations of the Italian Garden and the Great House forecourt. This February, The Trustees began the first phase of a 3-year renovation plan of the Grand Allee, the one-half mile long, undulating, grassy lawn framed by classical sculptures, Norway spruce, and pine hedgerows. Phase One of the project includes the removal of approximately 150 trees and the planting of 65 7-foot Norway spruce and White Pines.

    The Allee Restoration was disrupted by the late February nor’easter that wreaked havoc on the North Shore. Castle Hill was hit particularly hard, with more than 300 trees coming down in the storm. Crews worked tirelessly to clean up the property and make it safe for the public. Much work, including replanting trees and stabilizing stripped embankments, remains. The Trustees invite the public to help by planting seedlings in celebration of spring at the May 2nd Open House.

  • Sunday, December 13, 1:00 – 3:00 pm – Gibson House Museum Holiday Open House

    The Gibson House Museum  invites you to its Holiday Open House on Sunday, December 13, from 1 – 3 pm.

    The Gibson House Museum is the only museum in Back Bay, preserved as it was lived in by three generations of the Gibson family (1859-1954).  Opened as a museum in 1957, the house tells the story of daily life in the Back Bay from the mid-nineteenth to early twentieth century.  The Museum also displays its collection of Victorian and Edwardian decorative arts. The Gibson House Museum is located at 137 Beacon Street, Boston, MA 02116 (between Arlington and Berkeley Streets.)

    Kick off the holiday season at the Crane Estate as local florists and designers transform the Great House into a feast for the senses.

    Take a self-guided tour and enjoy cider, fresh-baked cookies, and the Gift Gallery with distinctive gifts.

    Throughout the weekend, there will be scheduled events including a tree-lighting, live music, a dance presentation, and more.

    Please consider bringing an unwrapped toy donation to the Gift Sleigh to benefit Ipswich Caring.

  • Saturday, October 24, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm – Greater Boston Food Bank Open House Celebration

    Do you know the  Food Bank feeds 83,000 people each week? Come to the open house on Saturday, October 24, from 10 – 2, and learn, get involved, and get inspired.  The event will take place at the Yawkey Distribution Center of the Greater Boston Food Bank, 70 South Bay Avenue in Boston.

    To achieve its mission, The Food Bank feeds more than 320,000 people annually in nine counties in eastern Massachusetts. They’re poor to middle-class people who can’t make ends meet. They’re our friends, neighbors, and colleagues. The Food Bank is the largest hunger-relief organization in New England and one of the largest food banks in the country. It distributes more than 30 million pounds of food and grocery products annually to a network of nearly 600 member hunger-relief agencies. It is a trusted and efficient resource for these local food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless and residential shelters, youth programs, senior centers, and day-care centers, providing the food they need to feed the hungry.

    Sunday, September 20 – Director’s Open House at Tower Hill

    Celebrate John W. Trexler’s 25th Anniversary as Tower Hill’s founding Executive Director, showcasing the best of Tower Hill.  Fun activities for all ages, multiple garden tours, demonstrations on organic gardening and Italian slow food cooking demonstrations, wildlife exhibits from the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, live birds of prey, hawk watching, wildlife photography, lectures on the interaction of plants and animals, videos, and at 2 pm, a special tree dedication in John’s honor.  For more information log on to www.towerhillbg.org.  Free admission all day.

  • Saturday, June 20, 9 – 5 – Annual White Flower Farm Open House

    For the past 56 years, White Flower Farm has been pleased to welcome old friends and new for iced tea and cucumber sandwiches on the lawn by their house. This informal tea party provides an opportunity for some garden chat, a leisurely view of the white border, and a cameo appearance by the pair of Shire horses used to mow grass. The date of the annual Open House this year is Saturday, June 20. The hosts for this gathering will include some or all of the owner’s children, and they are looking forward to meeting you. Service begins about 2:30, weather permitting, and continues until the grub runs out. The hat contest is in its second year. Last year some two-dozen ladies appeared in stylish sunbonnets and the winner, Ms. Donna Ferri, created a design that won our $100 gift certificate hands down.

    The annual Open House coincides with a spring Tent Sale that will be held Friday and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the store. Bring a friend and enjoy bargains on plants and garden accessories, as well as a stroll around the display gardens to see what we’ve been up to.   • Saturday, May 30 – Sunday, May 31 – Open House, A Standard Flower Show

    The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts and The Massachusetts Horticultural Society present Open House, A Standard Flower Show, at The Manor House & The Educational Building, Elm Bank Horticultural Center, Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street, Wellesley, Massachusetts 02482.  Hours are Saturday, 10 – 4, and Sunday, 11 – 4.  Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door.  Garden Club of the Back Bay Member Donna Morrissey is Co-Chairman of the Flower Show Committee, so we hope all our members will try to attend.  Open House is the second joint venture in what may become a biennial tradition at Elm Bank, home of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society.  Each organization is dedicated to the pursuit of perfection in horticulture and design.  Inspired by the surroundings at Elm Bank and mindful of the elements and principles of design, the aim of this show is to complement the Georgian House.  For directions and more information, log on to www.masshort.org. or www.gcfm.org.
