    Join members of The Garden Club of the Back Bay on Wednesday, January 13 beginning at 10:00 am at The College Club, 44 Commonwealth Avenue, for a January meeting featuring Chris Kurth of Siena Farms in Sudbury, Massachusetts.  Over the last 20 years, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer.  Here are the basics: a farmer offers a certain number of “shares” to the public.  Typically the share consists of a box of vegetables, but other farm products may be included.  Interested consumers purchase a share (a/k/a a “membership” or a “subscription”) and in return receive a box (bag, basket) of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season.  This arrangements creates several rewards for both the farmer and the consumer, and Chris will detail how this grass roots movement has had a profound impact on how we eat.  Many of our members know Chris from The Farmer’s Market on Copley Square, where his beautiful produce is always in high demand.  He supplies a number of Boston’s best restaurants as well.  If you are a GCBB member, you will receive, or may already have received, a written notice of the meeting.  If not, please rsvp to info@bostonflora.com.  There is no charge for the meeting, but there will be an optional lunch at the Club following the talk, which will cost $20, and reservations are essential.

    Looking for an alternative to using flowers flown in from all around the world with a high carbon footprint? Are you trying to buy locally, or even create beauty with found materials? Join arranger Joan Parker for an entertaining program of innovation and delight with original flower designs.  The program is overflowing with new ideas, some gathered on her travels to Europe and South America.  Naturally Simple is a fresh look at virtually everything.  With Joan’s theatrical background and craftsman’s degree in metalworking, she has explored art and design on many levels.  Her zest for life and experience has led her into wild and interesting adventures.  This special program is co-sponsored by The Garden Club of the Back Bay and The College Club of Boston.   An optional lunch with our speaker ($20) will follow the meeting.  Registration required.     The Birds & Beansâ„¢ story began in Toronto in 1998 when Madeleine and David Pritchard opened their Café and Roastery – serving only ‘Bird Friendly’® coffee. Ten years later Scott Weidensaul (Pulitzer prize finalist author and naturalist, ‘Living on the Wind’, ‘Of a Feather’) and Bill Wilson took up the cause to shift coffee drinking behavior of bird lovers in New England and New York.  Bill’s Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center (SMBC) ‘Bird Friendly’® certification means that Birds & Beans â„¢ coffee is 100%-organic shade-grown, ensuring the conservation of migratory bird habitat in Latin America. Tanagers, thrushes, orioles, warblers, oven-birds and other wonderful birds nesting in Northeast America find sanctuary in the rustic canopy, rain forest-like environments of family coffee farms that carry the SMBC certification. Sun grown coffee – genetically modified and heavily dependent on chemical fertilization, pesticides and herbicides – adds to the destruction of critical bird habitat in Latin America. ‘Birds & Beans the good coffee’ â„¢ is part of the solution. He wants to help add thousands of hectares of shade grown, organic coffee habitat to the farms already producing a truly sustainable and environmentally responsible crop.

    The Birds & Beans team has grown to include three ‘ Voices for the Birds‘ – authors, naturalists, educators and conservationists. Kenn Kaufman (‘Kingbird Highway’, Kaufman Field Guide series) and Bridget Stutchbury (‘Silence of Songbirds’, Professor and Director of The Stutchbury Lab at York University, Toronto) have joined Scott Weidensaul in getting the word out about The Good Coffee. Kenn, Bridget and Scott are touring New England and New York in 2009 and 2010 for The Birds & Beans Talks â„¢, a series of free lectures about the birds we know and love and how our lives and theirs are inexorably connected.   An optional lunch with our speaker will follow the Garden Club of the Back Bay  meeting, which will take place at The College Club, 44 Commonwealth Avenue in Boston.  Guests welcome.
