    Join Pacific Horticulture for an Alaskan adventure July 10 – 20. Our journey takes us from Anchorage to Seward, traveling along the scenic Cook Inlet and Chugach Mountains, then up the Denali Highway to Denali National Park, and inland to Fairbanks. We’ll see stately forests, beautiful gardens, streamside wildflowers, and dwarf tundra plants on the mountaintops. Experienced naturalist David Wimpfheimer will lead our expedition accompanied by John Burns, a botanist with years of Alaska expertise and other local guides.

  • Saturday, April 13 – Wednesday, April 24 (optional extension to Saturday, April 27) – Springtime in Japan: Exploring Gardens and Horticultural Traditions

    Join past Pacific Horticulture Society president Greg Graves for an in-depth exploration of Japanese gardens, culture and cuisine. Beginning in Tokyo, we venture north and west to areas off the normal Western tourist route where we can enjoy the beautiful countryside, see lovely gardens and experience exotic cuisine. Guests will have the opportunity to experience a delightful cruise on Matsushima Bay and see ancient temples and bonsai masterpieces. Gardens include one of the most beautiful gardens in Tokyo, the Rikugi-en, a strolling garden of the Edo period with spectacular views, Kairakuen, considered one of Japan’s finest landscape gardens and Motsuji, called the Pure Land Garden arranged so that the temple, garden, and pond are unified as one (pictured below, photo courtesy of www.gogotohoku.jp). Optional extension to Kyoto, a UNESCO World Heritage city. The trip will take place April 13 – 24, with Kyoto option running until April 27.

    Botanically, Hawaii is one of the most unique locations in the world, famous for its subtropical weather, mild ocean breezes, Polynesian culture, and diverse native flora and fauna. On April 1 – 11, Pacific Horticulture will explore the finest botanical gardens on the islands of Oahu, the Big Island of Hawaii, and the Garden Island of Kauai. The Hawaiian archipelago has existed for tens of millions of years and was colonized by wind blown seeds and insects, migrating birds, and floating vegetation washing on shore. From these random beginnings the natural world was created. It is beautiful, unique, and a true paradise.

    Hawaii offers the inquisitive traveler many opportunities to see native flora and fauna in the national and state Discover Botanical parks, and forest preserves. Botanic gardens, arboretums, and estates focus in part on preserving native species and, in some cases, endangered species propagation. The gardens also are wonderful places to see tropical trees, bushes, and flowers from all over the world. Several national parks on our itinerary feature geological wonders and native Hawaiian trees, plants, and birds.   • Tuesday, February 12 – Sunday, February 17, 2019 – South Florida: The Best of Miami and Naples’ Gardens

    Join Pacific Horticulture on February 12 – 17 for an immersive garden adventure in the semi-tropical clime of South Florida. From our base in Miami we’ll visit Kampong, a botanical garden that was once the private estate of Dr. David Fairchild, an influential horticulturist and plant collector. Other botanical garden visits include Montgomery Botanical Center and Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, lush educational gardens committed to the conservation of tropical plants, and we’ll take in the exquisite beauty of a 20-acre estate in Redlands known at Patch of Heaven (pictured below). Our visit to R.F. Orchids includes a tour of the beautiful nursery and background on their history, production methods, and sales operation.

    Landscape designer Raymond Jungles, who is renowned for his work on private gardens and resort hotels throughout Florida and the Caribbean, will accompany our group to Naples Botanical Garden. Jungles, who was part of the garden’s design team, will provide a special tour with backstory about the garden’s design and implementation. An associate of Raymond Jungles will provide our group exclusive entrance to four private home gardens that they have created before a farewell dinner at Fogo de Chao Brazilian Steakhouse on Miami Beach.   • Wednesday, July 11 – Tuesday, July 17 – Santa Fe: Folk Art, Gardens, Culture & Cuisine

    Join Pacific Horticulture July 11 – 17 as we tour beautiful Santa Fe, New Mexico to explore more than 1,000 years of culture, history, and tradition. Our itinerary includes visits to private gardens, the recently renovated Santa Fe Botanic Garden, and the world’s largest International Folk Art Market featuring more than 180 artists from 60 countries. A private docent-led tour of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum promises a deep look into the artist’s life and art in the region. A day trip to Chimayo and Taos includes a stop at the Mabel Dodge Luhan House. PHS executive director Carol Moholt will escort this tour.   • Monday, May 14 – Thursday, May 24 – England: Chelsea & the English Gardens of the Bohemians

    Join Pacific Horticulture May 14 – 24, 2018 and discover the extraordinary gardens of England’s bohemians, the artistic set made up of writers, philosophers, intellectuals, and artists in the early 20th century. We’ll explore the masterful gardens at Sissinghurst Castle created by Vita Sackville-West and Sir Harold Nicolson, and Charleston’s walled garden (pictured) created by the artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant while spending a half a day at its famed annual literary festival. We’ll also visit Farley Farmhouse, Nymans, and Virginia Wolfe’s home and garden, Monk’s House. This area of southern England also includes one of its greatest gardens, Great Dixter designed by Sir Christopher Lloyd. It and other gardens in this region will be on the itinerary, including lunch and a tour of the gardens at Gravetye Manor.

    Back in London, we’ll enjoy a walking tour of the Bloomsbury district where these intellectuals lived and visit some of its most famous Garden Squares followed by high tea. Our trip culminates at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show on the exclusive “members only” day. This tour will be escorted by PHS board member, Linda McKendry.

    The greater Philadelphia area boasts some of the most outstanding gardens in the United States. Join Pacific Horticulture June 3 – 9, 2018 for an inside look at historic gardens, exceptional nurseries, and private landscapes rarely open to the public.

    Our itinerary includes visits to estate gardens founded on fabulous wealth and a historic garden pre-dating American Independence, as well as a collection of delightful personal gardens. At Longwood Gardens we’ll attend the fabulous fountain show in the Italian-style outdoor theater.
