  • Saturday, September 26, 10 am – 2 pm – Sustainable Gardens at the Perkins School

    On Saturday, September 26, from 10 – 2, join Sonia Baerhuk, lead grounds-person, for a tour of the extensive campus at Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, the country’s first school for the visually impaired, founded in 1832. The school’s sustainable garden highlights range from the leaf and fallen tree composting systems to a tropical “Cathedral” greenhouse that operates without the use of chemicals. See the two recently installed rain gardens funded by a grant from the Watertown Community Foundation, as well as orchards that grow with biological controls and visit several native plant gardens.  The smells, textures and sounds in the various gardens enrich the lives of students, staff and visitors. Bring a bag lunch.   • Saturday, September 26, 11 am – 3 pm – Ferns of the Blue Hills

    The Blue Hills Reservation is the largest preserved natural area in eastern Massachusetts. It has quite a few spots that are rich in ferns. Join the New England Wild Flower Society and instructors Don Lubin and Raymond Abair on Saturday, September 26 at 11 am. They plan to  travel a new route and see more than a dozen fern species, including dramatic large displays of Virginia chain fern, ostrich fern (below), and Christmas ferns.   • Saturday, September 12, 2 – 4 pm – Tea and Garden Tour

    Join the folks from Russell’s Garden Center at the Damon-Kominz Garden in Weston for tea, a tour, and a talk! This charming and whimsical garden has been created by an avid gardener and her husband with a wonderfully eclectic collection of perennials, trees, and shrubs. Fred Dabney, from Quansett Nurseries, will discuss Fall Perennial Gardening at 2:30 p.m. while tea and scones are served. Fred will also be available for questions and suggestions regarding your garden. Please pre-register as this event is limited to 50 participants. $7.00 fee due at registration.   • Saturday, August 22 – Creating Home Outside with Julie Moir Messervy

    Creating Home Outside is an informative workshop including lecture, illustrative photographs, lively discussion and opportunities to practice Julie’s unique design principles. Messervy explains how and why good design works so that we may better refine our properties to meet our needs, as well as fulfill our longing for beautiful and meaningful places. Her lecture is based on a series of six steps that can be followed successfully by homeowners, gardeners and landscape professionals alike, to achieve cohesive and personally pleasing landscapes. Julie takes participants through an understandable process that yields clear and satisfying results. Spend a refreshing day renewing your sense of discovery for the landscape environment; learn how to strengthen the link between indoors and out; and evaluate your client’s needs and preferences to help them achieve a personal landscape that is uniquely their own. At the end of this exciting day, you’ll realize that you know enough to complete a conceptual design for yourself or a client.   • Tuesday, July 21, 10 – 11:30 a.m. – Flower Arranging: Fresh From the Garden

    The stunning arrangements of garden-grown flowers in the Polly Hill Arboretum Visitor Center in West Tisbury wow visitors, volunteers, and staff all season long.  These vibrant bouquets of familiar and unusual flowers are grown and arranged by PHA volunteer and retired commercial grower Susan Silva in her West Tisbury garden.  Join Silva from 10 – 11:30 as she shares techniques for growing and arranging cut flowers.  Using flowers from her garden, participants will create their own spectacular bouquets. Bring a container to transport your flowers home.   • Tuesday, July 7, 9 – 12 – Flower Arranging From the Garden

    Explore making good choices for floral arrangements through flower selection, learn simple techniques for cutting and conditioning materials, and see the appropriate methods of handling specific kinds of plant materials.

    Award winning floral designer Robin Murphy, who presented to The Garden Club of the Back Bay during the “Art in the Garden” theme year, will lead you through this process and guide you in the creation of your own abundant “gardenesque” floral arrangements.
