  • Thursdays, March 22 – May 24, 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm – Spring 2018 Home Horticulture Series

    Registration is now open for ten information-packed evenings classes designed to help home gardeners be more effective at their favorite pastime. The Massachusetts Master Gardener Association is sponsoring Thursday evening classes, March 22 – May 24 from 6:30 – 8:30. The Home Hort Series covers all of the topics studied by certified Master Gardeners, but in a streamlined format suited to busy lifestyles: the program does not require outside reading, homework, volunteering, or testing. Topics include:

    • Perennials • Landscape Design Basics • Woody Plants & Pruning • Lawn Care & Alternatives • Vegetable Culture • Soil • Weed Ecology • Botany • Diseases & Pests • Nomenclature

    Classes are conveniently held at the historic Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate, a Trustees of Reservations property, 2468 Washington Street, Canton, just minutes off Rt. 128, south of Boston. The cost of the 10-lecture series is $250.00 per person, payable in advance by credit card, Pay Pal or personal check. Click here to register online.   • Sunday, July 30, 10:30 am – 12:00 noon – What’s Buggin’ Me?

    Join Massachusetts Horticultural Society on Sunday, July 30 at 10:30 am for a stroll through the vegetable gardens at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley, with Sue Scheufele from the UMass Extension Vegetable Program. We will learn to identify common insect and disease pests, and the damage they can cause to vegetable and herb plants. We will discuss organic management strategies that are available to home gardeners including use of mulches, row covers, bio-based pesticides and more.

    Hannah Traggis manages Mass Hort’s edible gardens throughout The Gardens at Elm Bank. She oversees the Seed to Table vegetable garden which produces more than 4,000 pounds of produce each year to support our educational mission and local food pantries.   • Sunday, June 4, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Pest Walk with The Trustees Gardener

    Join The Trustees of Reservations Superintendent and Horticulturist Kevin Block on Sunday, June 4 from 10 – noon at the Stevens-Coolidge Place in North Andover for this gardening workshop on pests. Learn all about techniques for identifying and combating pests and pathogens in your garden. Together, we will walk through the gardens, looking for symptoms that can help you identify any developing problems in your garden. With each issue we will discuss the best practices for managing the pest or pathogen so your garden can stay healthy and thriving all season long. Trustees member price $24, nonmember $30.   • Tuesday, February 23, 6:00 pm – From Cooking Food to Cooking the Planet: Growing Constraints to Food Production

    To keep pace with the world’s food demand, it is estimated that agriculture production must double by 2050.  Dr. Samuel Myers, Instructor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a practicing physician, will discuss troubling trends, including climate change and increased threats from pests and pathogens that may constrain the world’s resources, requiring new approaches to sustainable agriculture.  The program will include a discussion moderated by Noel Michele Holbrook, Professor of Biology and Charles Bullard Professor of Forestry at Harvard. Free and open to the public. Part of the Food for Thought program series.

  • Saturday, November 14, 9:00 – 11:00 am – Asian Longhorn Beetle Battle

    Asian Longhorned Beetle (“ALB”) is an invasive wood-boring pest that was discovered in Worcester, MA in August 2008. It is a huge threat to the trees that grow in our parks and along every street, and puts the livelihood of our state’s forests as well as our nursery and maple syrup industries at risk. Help us survey Boston’s trees for signs of this invasive beetle. Learn how to recognize ALB and ALB tree damage, and what trees are most vulnerable. A brief training session will be held before the survey.
