  • Saturday, July 12, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm – Drawing Through a Microscope

In this July 12 workshop at the Art + Science in the Field studio at 53 East Street in Petersham, Massachusetts, we will use graphite pencil, ink pen, and color pencil to learn accurate drawing techniques for microscopic images. Microscope is 8x to 320x and we will capture your images with photos and work from those. We will have a wide array of natural materials to choose from including botany slides, insect wings, seeds, mushroom spores, etc. You might want to explore Brooks Woodland Preserve across the street before the workshop, to collect biological materials to draw. Parking for the workshop is available along the roadside across the street on East Street, and also along Oliver Street.

No previous experience required and all materials provided. However, it will be helpful to bring a laptop if you have one. We will capture microscopic images and you can draw from those visual references on your computer screen.

Instructor Nancy Lowe is an artist, naturalist and eductor. If you have questions, email sciencecandance@gmail.com. $75. Register through Eventbrite HERE

  • Saturday, November 22, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Looking for Green in a Brown Landscape: Evergreen Plants Around Harvard Pond, Petersham

Join leaders Joe Choiniere and Wendy Howes of the Hubbardston-Ware River Nature Club for a hike around Harvard Pond as they look for all manner of evergreen plants. Many trees, ground mosses, woody shrubs, and more are bright and fresh-looking amongst the browns and grays of the late-fall landscape. You’ll also watch for waterfowl and any other bird species that happen to come our way. This hike is approximately 3 miles of mostly-flat terrain. You’ll encounter at least one beaver-impacted muddy area. Wear appropriate foot gear and dress for the weather. Bring binoculars and magnifying lens. Details of meeting place to be announced. Call 413-477-9229 or email chenshaw@eqlt.org for more information. Photo from http://www.endlessvelolove.blogspot.com.

  • Wednesday, July 25, 9:00 am – 12:00 noon – Nature Hike at Rutland Brook Sanctuary

There are 4 miles of trails at Mass Audubon’s Rutland Brook Wildlife Sanctuary. On Wednesday, July 25 (foul weather date Thursday, July 26) after a short walk alongside Connor Pond, we’ll hike 3-4 miles of moderate-to-strenuous—depending upon our group–interlinking trails that wind through cathedral-like stands of hemlocks and white pine. Rutland Brook loop trail follows the hemlock-lined brook and is a nice place to cool off in the summer. This is the height of the nesting season for our breeding birds, so we’ll be looking for some not-so-obvious signs of successful nestings. We’ll also take time to enjoy other interesting features such as butterflies, plants, animal sign, etc. Participants may wish to bring cameras, insect repellent, and drinks/lunch. Food and beverages also available at Petersham Country Store before or after the outing. Meet at 9 am at the sanctuary parking area next to Connor Pond, bearing left off Pat Connor Road.  Pat Connor Road is on the east side of Route 32/122 in Petersham, Massachusetts.  For more information email hubbardstonnatureclub@yahoo.com.
