  • Tuesdays, January 9 and 23, and February 6, 9:00 am – Forest Bathing at Polly Hill Arboretum

    Enjoy an easy, mindful walk through beautiful Polly Hill Arboretum trees in a peaceful winter setting. These walks are led by Shanta Gabriel, who has worked in the field of alternative health for 40 years and has been leading groups in nature for over a decade. Sign up for one class or all. Rain dates will be held on the following Thursday. Please meet at our Visitor Center. Remember to dress accordingly, this program will be held outdoors.

    As you get ready to garden this spring, learn how to design a garden that’s not only beautiful but also promotes biodiversity. Learn about the principles and processes of ecological landscape design with Polly Hill Arboretum Horticulturist Oliver Osnoss. We will cover methods of studying and analyzing the landscape to inform design decisions, including tips for avoiding common and costly mistakes.

  • Wednesday, August 19, 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Stunning Stewartias: Asiatic Stewartias and their Culture, Online

    Join Polly Hill Arboretum Executive Director Tim Boland online on Wednesday, August 19 at 3 pm as he shares the fascinating history, diversity, and culture of the beautiful white-flowering trees, the Asiatic Stewartias. Tim will detail Polly Hill’s own introduction to the group of trees which are highly valued for their camellia-like flowers, expressive bark patterns and garden adaptability. The PHA holds the national collection for the genus along with the Arnold Arboretum in nearby Boston. Come join us as we learn about new cultivated varieties and helpful suggestions as to how you can grow these trees in your own landscape. Free for PHA members, $10 for nonmembers.   • Thursday, July 5, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Joys of Butterfly Gardening

    Butterflies are welcome visitors to our gardens. Join Susie Bowman, teacher/naturalist at Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary and avid gardener, at the Polly Hill Arboretum on Thursday, July 5, from 10 – noon, to learn how to attract more of these beautiful insects to your garden. She will introduce the basic needs of butterflies and how to plan or modify gardens to meet these needs. Susie will illustrate with images of island butterflies that frequent specific plants at the Felix Neck butterfly garden. The program will conclude with a walk to the Polly Hill homestead border. Butterfly-friendly plant list included!

  • Wednesday, July 6, 4:00 pm – Healing Ourselves Across Six Continents

    Join Holly Bellebuono of Vineyard Herbs at 4 pm on Wednesday, July 6 at the Polly Hill Arboretum in Martha’s Vineyard for an intriguing account of the most influential women healers of the 21st century. After two years of traveling and conducting interviews, Holly shares the extraordinary stories of traditional healing practices and the women from around the world who are keeping them alive.     Enough about the distinguished Federal and Greek Revival homes of Edgartown— have you experienced the tree tour?!  Join Polly Hill Arboretum collections and grounds manager Tom Clark for this informative and fun walking tour of the many glorious mature trees of Edgartown on Tuesday, June 23, beginning at 10 am. In the midst of the mantle of green that envelops downtown Edgartown, the hydrangeas and picket fences, many unique and fine specimen trees await discovery. Inspect the famous Pagoda Tree and so much more.
