    The PHS Philadelphia Flower Show is the nation’s largest and longest-running horticultural event and fundraiser featuring stunning displays by the world’s premier floral, garden, and landscape designers.   • Saturday, February 8, 11:00 am – 1:00 pm Eastern – All About Terrariums and Vivariums, Online

    Discover how to design your own terrarium or vivarium with Christopher Satch, plant scientist and award-winning exhibitor at the Philadelphia Flower Show. Through lecture and demonstration, he’ll discuss how to set up a simple, easy care terrarium, how to create an automated climate-controlled vivarium, and everything in between.   • Saturday, March 4 – Sunday, March 12 – The Philadelphia Flower Show 2023: The Garden Electric

    The 2023 Philadelphia Flower Show makes its return to the Pennsylvania Convention Center to amaze visitors with an exciting floral experience, bringing together dynamic designers, bold exhibits, world-class shopping, education, music, food, and family fun.

    Open daily from 10 am – 7 pm; until 8 pm on March 4, March 10 & 11; open until 6 pm on March 12. Tickets are valid for one visit, any day of the Show. There is Butterflies Live! Experience beautiful and exotic creatures, learn how to attract butterflies to your garden and snap the perfect selfie with you and some fluttery friends. Flowers After Hours on March 11 from 8:30 – 11:30 will allow you to drink, eat, and dance among the beautiful exhibits. Enjoy the night with great tastings and incredible live music. Admission includes exclusive access to the Flower Show after the Show closes for public entry. This event is for guests 21 years and older. Artisan Row is an elevated crafting experience led by talented horticultural artisans. Partake in a variety of arts that includes fresh floral crowns, personalized candle making, dried floral arranging, and botanical jewelry.   • Sunday, November 20, 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Orchids for the Holidays, Online

    Take a break from the stress of the holiday season to enjoy an entertaining and informative afternoon with an orchid expert and come away with an elegant holiday present to give to that special someone on your list or to keep all to yourself.

    In a relaxed and convivial session, participants will learn about many aspects of the beloved flower and our endless fascination with it. Orchid history, origins, trivia, fun facts, and basic care instructions are among the topics covered.

    In a hands-on activity, all participants create their own “holiday orchid centerpiece”. A supply list is provided which gives ideas for orchid genera, containers and decorations. Detailed instructions on creating the centerpiece will be given at the end of the class. Also provided is a fun holiday orchid trivia quiz for you to look at ahead of time. Answers will be provided at the beginning of the class.

    This class will be recorded. This Smithsonian Associates class is taught by Barbara Schmidt. Barb Schmidt has a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and chemistry and a teaching certificate in secondary science. She has been raising orchids for over 17 years, and her orchids have won a variety of awards, including first place ribbons at the Philadelphia Flower Show. She is an active member of the American Orchid Society (AOS) and in 2021 was elected to the AOS Board of Trustees. She is also Vice-Chair of the AOS Education Committee and has spear-headed several projects involving children’s education and orchids. In 2021, Barb received the AOS Certificate of Meritorious Achievement in Orchid Education. Besides maintaining a website at www.basorchidcare.com, Barb is also a regular instructor for the New York Botanical Gardens, the U.S. Botanic Gardens and the Smithsonian Associates Studio Arts Program. In 2019, Barb re-published her first book in color, Orchid Care: For the Beginner Full Color Edition.

  • Wednesday, July 27, 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm – Immigrant Landscapes

    Wambui Ippolito is the 2021 “Best in Show” award winner at the Philadelphia Flower Show, the largest show of its kind in North America. Born in Kenya, Ms. Ippolito was influenced by her mother’s garden in Nairobi, her grandmother’s farm in the countryside, and the natural landscapes of East Africa. Speaking from personal experience, Wambui’s talk will follow immigrant footprints through the American landscape. The Polly Hill Arboretum Lecture will take place Wednesday, July 27 at 5:30 pm on Martha’s Vineyard. $5 for PHA members, $10 for nonmembers.

    Melissa Pace is an award-winning horticulturalist who competes in numerous garden and flower shows, from Philadelphia Flower Show to the Bolton Fair. She has been a University of Rhode Island Master Gardener since 2003. Melissa has been a presenter for numerous garden clubs and civic organizations throughout New England since 1995. Melissa holds a master’s degree in teaching from Bridgewater University, is an artist and art teacher. On July 15 at 7 pm, Melissa will conduct a flower arranging workshop at The Gardens at Elm Bank. Do you throw away prunings from your woody trees and shrubs? Learn how to put them to work in bold indoor and outdoor arrangements! Participants will leave with their own beautiful, seasonal arrangement. Materials provided will be a decorative pot or container, fresh greens, interesting woody materials, seasonal accent materials such as berries, foliage, etc., a list of ideal woody arrangement materials, and a pruning trimmer, although feel free to bring your own if you have one. $48 for Mass Hort members, $70 for nonmembers.   • Wednesday, October 21, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Create Your Own Big, Beautiful Arrangements

    Do you throw away prunings from your woody trees and shrubs? Learn how to put them to work in bold indoor and outdoor arrangements. Participants will leave with their own beautiful, seasonal arrangement. The Mass Hort class will be held October 21 from 7 – 8:30 in the Putnam Building at The Gardens at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley.

    Materials provided will be:

    * A decorative pot or container

    * Fresh greens

    * Interesting woody materials

    * Seasonal accent materials such as pine cones, dried pods, & berries

    * A list of ideal woody arrangement materials

    * A pruning trimmer (Feel free to bring your own if you have one)

  • Thursday, October 10, 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm – Growing and Using Herbs Year Round

    Herbs have been employed by all cultures, throughout human history, in variety of ways including culinary, medicinal, and spiritual usage. On Thursday, October 10 at 6:30 at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, we will look at how herbs have been utilized in the past, and apply their use into today’s world. Together we will smell, taste and plant a variety of herbs. Come learn why it is best to grow your own herbs – then learn how to best grow, preserve, and use these incredibly useful plants.   • Friday, March 10 – Sunday, March 19 – The Philadelphia Flower Show

  • Friday, March 4 – Sunday, March 13 – Philadelphia Flower Show: Explore America, 100 Years of the National Park Service

    The PHS Philadelphia Flower Show is an annual event at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in March. It is the world’s oldest and largest indoor flower show, attracting more than 260,000 people annually. The Show features large-scale gardens, elaborate landscapes, and over-the-top floral creations.

    Visitors to the PHS Philadelphia Flower Show are treated to fabulous design, live entertainment, gardening how-to workshops, and lectures by experts. Show week begins with an exclusive black-tie Preview Party, one of Philadelphia’s premier events.

    The 2016 Flower Show opens on Saturday, March 5 and will close on Sunday, March 13. The Preview Party will be held on the evening of Friday, March 4.
