  • Saturday, November 7, 10 am – 12:30 pm – Conifers for Urban Sites

    Mount Auburn Cemetery’s Horticultural Curator Dennis Collins is the go-to guy for teaching about conifers.  He will use the Arnold Arboretum’s vast collection of conifers to show those that would be suited for smaller spaces in city gardens. Dennis will also recommend plants that can withstand some of the stressors common to urban sites, such as extreme wind or heat.  Dress for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes for this class, which takes place entirely outdoors.  The location is Bussey Street Gate, Arnold Arboretum, Jamaica Plain.  For directions, and to register, log on to www.wellesley.edu/WCFH, or www.arboretum.harvard.edu, or email horticulture@wellesley.edu.  Cost is $30 for members of WCFH and the Arboretum, $35 for non members.   • Monday, October 19, 2:00 pm – The Gardens of Paris

    Experience the gardens of Paris as close up as you can hope for without being there.  Wellesley College Botanic Garden docent and former Paris garden tour guide Maureen Bovet provides us with her unique view of Paris’ most beautiful parks and gardens.  Maureen will show us well known historic parks – Luxembourg, Parc Monceau (pictured below, photo courtesy of Marcel Germain), Jardin des Plantes, Medieval Garden of Cluny Museum, and Parc des Buttes-Chaumont – as well as several exciting new Paris gardens – Parc de Bercy, Promenade Plantee and Andre Citroen, with their innovative urban park designs.  She will discuss French garden design and plant cultivation, along with the fascinating history of these parks.  The program will begin with tea at 2:00 pm, and the lecture follows at 2:30.  WCFH members $10, non-members $13.  To register, or for more information, log on to www.wellesley.edu/SCFH, or email horticulture@wellesley.edu.

  • Thursdays, Sept. 24, Oct. 1, 8, 15, 6:30 – 8:30 pm – Private Spaces: Garden Redesign for Homeowners

    Have you bought a home and with it an overgrown garden? Or are you living with a garden that’s become uninspiring? Even the smallest of yards can yield a successful garden if planned wisely. You will learn how to design your personal space for maximum use and aesthetic appeal and to deal with questions of sun, shade, drainage, and water in an urban or suburban environment. Peter Medaglia, Landscape Designer and Owner of Gold Medal Gardens, will discuss plants suitable for smaller spaces and will work with you to develop your own redesign. These classes will take place at the Hunnewell Building at the Arnold Arboretum.
