  • Through February 24 – Ansel Adams in Our Time

Ansel Adams in Our Time traces the iconic visual legacy of Ansel Adams (1902–1984), presenting some of his most celebrated prints, from a symphonic view of snow-dusted peaks in The Tetons and Snake River, Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming (1942) to an aerial shot of a knotted roadway in Freeway Interchange, Los Angeles (1967). The Museum of Fine Arts exhibition looks both backward and forward in time: his black-and-white photographs are displayed alongside prints by several of the 19th-century government survey photographers who greatly influenced Adams, as well as work by contemporary artists whose modern-day concerns centered on the environment, land rights, and the use and misuse of natural resources point directly to Adams’ legacy. • Wednesday, September 12 – Saturday, November 17 – The Landscape Architecture of Lawrence Halprin

The Landscape Architecture of Lawrence Halprin, a traveling photographic exhibition about the life and work of landscape architect Lawrence Halprin (1916-2009), will be on view in Boston, Massachusetts, at the Boston Architectural College, 320 Newbury Street, Boston, from September 12 through November 17, 2018. Created in 2016 during the centennial anniversary of Halprin’s birth, The Cultural Landscape Foundation exhibition features 56 newly commissioned photographs by leading landscape photographers of dozens of Halprin’s major works, including recently rediscovered residential projects created early in his career in the 1950s; the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial in Washington, D.C.; capstone projects such as the Yosemite Falls approach and Stern Grove in San Francisco; the Los Angeles Open Space Network; and Plaza Las Fuentes in Pasadena.

Halprin was, without doubt, among the foremost landscape architects of the twentieth century. His prolific career spanned more than six decades, with highlights that also include Freeway Park (in Seattle, Washington), and the Portland Open Space Sequence (in Portland, Oregon). His firm was a seedbed for many talented designers now celebrated in their own right, and the innovative techniques he pioneered changed the field forever. While the traveling exhibition will honor Halprin and his career, it will also call attention to the need for the informed and effective stewardship of his irreplaceable legacy. Like much of the work of prominent landscape architects in the post-War period, many of Halprin’s designs are now in a diminished state, while some face an uncertain future.

  • Through Tuesday, October 2 – Continuation: Seasons at the Arboretum

Jim Harrison worked for the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University in 2008, photographing the landscape through four full seasons. After that year, he returned, worked at his own pace, and expanded his perspective. For him, the Arboretum became a living, ever changing laboratory in which to explore the simple but fundamental act of observation.

Harrison photographed in rain and snow, at dawn and dusk, even working on days when the beauty of the Arboretum seemed less obvious, or in some cases all too obvious. In time, he also began to see plants in relation to their surroundings. The photographs in this exhibition will encourage viewers to think in new ways about both the place and the process. His show, Continuation: Seasons at the Arboretum, will be on view in the Hunnewell Building Lecture Hall through October 2.

Note: For exhibition availability, refer to Hunnewell Visitor Center hours at https://www.arboretum.harvard.edu/visit/hours-services-and-policies/.

In this hands-on New England Wild Flower Society workshop at Nasami Farm in Whatley on Saturday, August 11 from 10 – 2, we will explore the history and methodology of botanical cyanotype prints and create our own. The class will be led by Alexis Doshas and is $53 for NEWFS members, $64 for nonmembers. Register at http://www.newenglandwild.org/learn/our-programs/native-botanical-cyanotype-print-workshop
