  • Wednesday, August 14, 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm – Plant Exploration: The Passion and the Insanity

    Bringing plants into cultivation can serve many purposes, including the benefits of increasing urban landscape biodiversity as well as preserving the genetics of species of conservation concern in safe sites.  Plant exploration has many ethical, legal, natural, and physical challenges to navigate, but ultimately is a satisfying endeavor that seems to be taken on only by a small collaborative group of the most passionate plant nerds. Join Adam Black, Director of Horticulture and Plant Conservation at Bartlett Research Labs and Arboretum, as he chronicles the various exhilarating adventures, unexpected complications, and comical situations he has encountered in both far-flung regions of the world as well as the surprisingly under-explored regions of the US.  The program will take place at the Polly Hill Arboretum Far Barn, 809 State Road in West Tisbury, on August 14 at 5:30 pm. $5 for Polly Hill members, $10 for nonmembers.   • Thursday, March 23, 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm Eastern – Plant Exploration, Then and Now, Live and Online

    The Arnold Arboretum has been collecting plants from around the world for 150 years, but plant exploration today looks very different than it did in the 1800s. From changes in collecting practices to an evolving relationship between the Arboretum and its international partners, a lot has changed in the last century. Join Head of the Library and Archives Lisa Pearson and Keeper of the Living Collections Michael Dosmann on March 23 at 6:30 pm in the Weld Hill Research Building, 1300 Center Street in Boston, to learn what these trips were like in the days of yore, and what they are like now.  To register for the in person program, click here.

    Dr. Michael Dosmann, Keeper of Living Collections, Arnold Arboretum, will address the New England Botanical Club on Friday, November 2 at 6:45 pm on the topic of Is Plant Exploration Dead in a Plant-blind Era? Meetings at Harvard University are held in Haller Lecture Hall (Room 102), Geological Museum, 24 Oxford St., Cambridge, MA 02138 (door to right of Harvard Museum of Natural History entrance).   • Wednesday, August 19, 7:30 p.m. – Plant Hunting in Asia with Dan Hinkley

    Trekking through remote forests in exotic destinations in search of rare and wondrous plants may seem like a Victorian pursuit, but not to plant explorer Dan Hinkley. This award-winning horticulturist, nurseryman, and garden writer has traveled the globe to bring unusual plants to North American gardeners. While he experiences plant exploration as a joyous adventure, he also sees it as an imperative. He emphasizes, “We need to know what is surviving at this moment in time on the planet.” For this program The Polly Hill Arboretum in West Tisbury has asked Hinkley to share his breathtaking pictures and plant hunting adventures in Taiwan, Japan, and Korea to coordinate with their plant collections and Polly’s historical interest in Asian plants. 7:30 pm. $10/$5 for PHA members.   • Tuesday, June 30, 10 – 11:30 a.m. – If Trees Could Talk

    Dawn redwood, dove tree, and franklinia are just a handful of the trees growing at the Arboretum with engaging stories of how they secured a place in gardens and in the history of plant exploration. If our trees could talk, they might share accounts of faraway forests, botanical adventures, and intrepid plant explorers. Join Collections and Grounds Manager Tom Clark on a walking tour of the Arboretum where he will reveal some of the fascinating stories behind these and other beloved plants.$5/free to PHA members. 508-693-9426
