    Wright-Locke Farms in Winchester is bringing back Farm Talks! This year, each community talk will focus on topics related to sustainability. First up, on April 14 at 7 pm, we host a panel discussion about pollinators, poisons, and planting. Learn what you can do to support healthy ecosystems in your yard and community. These talks will give you a wide range of information to be a better environmental steward, a cause very close to our hearts.

  • Wednesday, June 10, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Chasing the Red Queen: The Evolutionary Race Between Pests and Poisons

    Try as we might, our every attempt to control insects and weeds is met with an evolutionary response: they adapt and become resistant to the poisons. We fight back with new, improved chemicals—they respond by adapting again, and on it goes, over and over, as it has for the past sixty years. But Andy Dyer, PhD, Associate Professor of Biology, University of South Carolina, believes that if we use the principles of evolutionary biology, we stand a good chance of taking control of our food supply and weaning our agricultural system from chemical dependence. Join us for a biological perspective on securing foods of our future. Dr. Dyer will speak at the Arnold Arboretum, Hunnewell Building, 125 Arborway, Jamaica Plain, on Wednesday, June 10 from 7 – 8:30. Fee $10 general; students are free.     Currently, the City of Boston’s Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Days are scheduled for:

    9am-2pm

    100 Morrissey Blvd., Dorchester

    June 26, 2010
    9am-2pm
    West Roxbury Public Works Yard
    315 Gardner St, West Roxbury

    Guidelines

    Put household poisons, insecticides, paint, tires, auto fluids, car batteries, wood preservatives, herbicides and pool supplies, propane tanks, motor oil , and products labeled corrosive, flammable or toxic in cardboard boxes for safe transport and bring them to the above locations.

    For Boston residents only. No commercial waste will be accepted. Proof of residency required. The City reserves the right to reject materials. For more information call 617-635-4959.

    TVs & computer monitors are NOT accepted at Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Days. Please call 617-635-7574 for home pickup of TVs and computer monitors.
