  • Tuesday, June 28, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Joys of Butterfly Gardening

    Butterflies are welcome visitors to the gardens at Polly Hill Arboretum in West Tisbury, Martha’s Vineyard. Join Susie Bowman, teacher/naturalist at Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary and avid gardener, to learn how to attract more of these beautiful insects to your garden. She will introduce the basic needs of butterflies and how to plan or modify gardens to meet these needs. Susie will illustrate with images of island butterflies that frequent specific plants at the Felix Neck butterfly garden. The program will conclude with a walk to the Polly Hill homestead border.   • Tuesdays, June 21, June 28, July 12 & July 19, and Thursdays, August 4 & 11, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Observing and Drawing the Landscape

    Learn art techniques to record observations of the natural landscape with Diane Nicholls, painter, illustrator, and landscape historian. Lessons, which take place at the Polly Hill Arboretum in Martha’s Vineyard, will include perspective, sketching, and developing personal “shorthand.” Methods for keeping a daily sketch book will also be covered. Each class can stand on its own or taken as a series, the sessions augment each other. $35/$30 for PHA members per class, $30/$25 per class for 2 or more sessions.  The sessions will take place Tuesdays, June 21, June 28, July 12 and July 19, and Thursdays, August 4 and 11, from 1 – 4 pm.  Please register in advance and call for supply list: 508-693-9426.  Picture below courtesy of the Martha’s Vineyard Times.

  • Saturday, June 11, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm – Compost Tea Workshop

    Most gardeners know the impressive benefits of homegrown compost, but did you know that by steeping compost in water you can produce a superior product? Join author Christopher Roddick, head arborist at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and certified Master Composter, at the Polly Hill Arboretum on Saturday, June 11, from 9 – 1, to learn the process of making compost tea. This workshop will cover how to make high-quality compost and the logistics of producing and using compost tea. Roddick will also discuss the relationship between plants and soil and how to improve plant and soil health.  $45/$40 for PHA members.   • Saturday, May 28, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm – Spring into Summer: A Celebration of Plants

    In modern day landscapes small flowering trees have an essential role in providing year-round interest without growing so big to dominate them. Increasingly, gardeners have sought out trees for foundation plantings or focal points that fit the scale of the garden and form the basis for a dynamic, beautiful, and diverse landscape.   • Saturday, May 28, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm – Spring into Summer: A Celebration of Plants

    The Polly Hill Arboretum on State Road in West Tisbury is looking forward to a new season and will open its Visitor Center on May 28 with a new event, Spring into Summer: A Celebration of Plants.  This celebration will kick off the summer season with the annual Memorial Day plant sale, special talks and tours, a book sale, tree raffle, garden talks,  and much more.  For more information, log on to www.pollyhillarboretum.org, or follow them on Facebook.

     

     

     

  • Monday, May 16 – Thursday, May 19 – Delaware Valley Garden Tour

    Don’t miss this incredible opportunity – a spring garden tour of the Delaware Valley. Join Polly Hill Arboretum Executive Director Tim Boland and Education and Outreach Administrator Karin Stanley from May 16–19 to visit the gardens of the Delaware Valley including Winterthur, the Scott Arboretum, Chanticleer, Mt. Cuba Center (pictured below), and the Jenkins Arboretum, as well as two private gardens. The tour package includes accommodations at the extraordinary Wayne Hotel in Wayne, Pennsylvania, as well as all garden tours, daily lunch and a spectacular dinner at the Mt. Cuba Center.  Tour price is $1,200 per person based on double occupancy, with a $262 single supplement.  This price includes 3 nights lodging, private transportation with guide, entrance fees to gardens with private guided tours, 3 lunches, 1 dinner, tips and taxes.  $200 is ta tax deductible donation to the Polly Hill Arboretum.   • Saturdays, December 11, January 8, February 12, and March 12, 10:00 am – 11:00 am – Winter Walk at Polly Hill Arboretum

    Every season of the year the Arboretum landscape offers something of beauty and interest to visitors. This winter on the second Saturday of the month join Arboretum staff to explore the grounds in the “off-season.” Tours are at 10am and run for a little over an hour.   • Saturday, November 6, 11:00 am – 1:30 pm – Soups and Sides at Polly Hill Arboretum

    On Saturday, November 6 from 11:00am to 1:30pm the Polly Hill Arboretum hosts Cathy Walthers, Island chef and author of Raising the Salad Bar, and Soups and Sides, for a soup making demonstration and tasting. Begin the day with a staff led tour of the Arboretum, then enjoy a delicious bowl of soup while Cathy shares some recipes and soup making tips. $30/$25 for PHA members.   • Tuesday, July 6, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm – Herbal Salve Workshop

    Making Herbal Salves at the Polly Hill Arboretum, State Road, West Tisbury will take place Tuesday, July 6 (repeats August 17) 1pm-3pm.   Holly Bellebuono of Vineyard Herbs returns to PHA for her popular salve-making workshop. This fun hands-on workshop starts with a walk to identify and collect medicinal herbs and weeds on the Arboretum grounds. Then participants make their own oil infusions and beeswax-based ointments. Learn practical knowledge on when and how to use herbal salves and take home your useful creations. Supplies included. $45/$40 for PHA members.
