Expert guides will take you on a journey through time in the historic gardens and landscapes and teach about the careful stewardship and maintenance that goes into preserving the living collection. Gain insights into traditional gardening techniques and how they have evolved, blending seamlessly with modern practices to ensure the gardens’ continued vitality and their ability to share the stories of the people who lived within them. The tours will take place on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays now through September 26 from 11 – noon, except for June 19, July 4, and September 1 & 4.

  • Saturday, August 12, 9:30 am – 4:00 pm – The Summer Drawing Tour Through Historic New England: Hamilton House and Langdon House

    Join the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art for this Summer Drawing Tour series through Historic New England, led by Architect, David Pearson. The program will be held August 12 from 9:30 – 4, at Hamilton House, 40 Vaughan’s Land in South Berwick, Maine, and at Governor John Langdon House, 143 Pleasant Street in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

    Sketching historic sites provides participants with practical knowledge of tradition as manifest in the architecture. The morning session will be at the 18th-century Hamilton House. Special attention will be made in drawing the house in the landscape. The afternoon session will be at Langdon House where the focus will be the study of Georgian details.

    Participants follow in the great tradition of architects and artists who have learned from drawing in situ. One may take a thousand photos of a subject and may not know it…but if one spends some time drawing the same object …you will have it in your mind forever. To draw is to see. The program focuses on the enduring vitality and continuity of the classical tradition through the means of observational and analytical drawing.

  • Thursday, April 12, 7:00 pm – Four Centuries of New England Garden History

    Join the Massachusetts Horticultural Society and John Forti on Thursday, April 12 at 7 pm at Elm Bank in Wellesley for an illustrated talk exploring trends and plant selections in garden design from native gardens to historically inspired gardens in America today. John Forti is the Curator of Historic Gardens at the Strawbery Banke Museum in Portsmouth, NH. He is a nationally recognized lecturer and writer on food and gardening. The lecture is free but registration is requested at www.masshort.org.

  • Through Saturday, March 31 – Grounding: Small New England Farms

    Photographer John Benford is exhibiting his series, Grounding: Small New England Farms, at the Farm Art Gallery. The gallery is located at Natick Community Organic Farm, 117 Eliot Street, Natick, Massachusetts. It is open daily during day-light hours; admission is free.  The exhibit will run throughout March, 2012, and includes portraits of farmers and scenes from farm life, taken primarily on small farms in the Seacoast area.

    Founded in 1974, Natick Community Organic Farm is a nonprofit, certified-organic farm providing productive open space, farm products, and hands-on education for all ages, year-round. The farm’s art gallery focuses on farm- and nature-related art from established and up-and-coming artists.     NEW CASTLE GARDEN TOUR HELPS PONTINE TO FLOWER Visit a variety of exquisite gardens in Pontine Theatre’s annual New Castle Village Walk and Garden Tour on Sunday, June 12 from 1 – 4 pm. “Gardens are bursting with flowers and fragrance at this time of year,” said Marguerite Mathews, co-director of Pontine Theatre. “We invite you to meander through the marigolds,consort with the columbines or pause to admire the beautiful seaside views.” The self-guided walking tour takes participants on a leisurely stroll through the quaint seaside town and into seven private gardens, some on the water’s edge. Originally developed by Nancy Seagren, a long-time New Castle resident and Pontine’s former general manager, the tour offers a complimentary trolley for participants who would rather ride than walk to each garden. Tickets purchased in advance are $15 and are available online at www.pontine.org and at Portsmouth Gardens, 1000 Woodbury Ave.; Maine-ly New Hampshire, 33 Deer St., Portsmouth and Rye Ridge Greenery, 630 Washington Rd., Rye. Tickets are $20 on the day of the event and may be purchased at the Maude Trefethen School, Rte.1B, New Castle, where participants also can pick up their map and enjoy a glass of lemonade and cookies. All proceeds benefit Pontine Theatre’s cultural and educational programs.
