  • Saturday, February 27, 10:30 am – 12:00 noon – Poupourri For a Joyful Spring

    Potpourri, French for rotten pot, is a fragrant, often beautiful, mix of scented plant material with a long and fascinating history. In this Tower Hill Botanic Garden in-person program on February 27 from 10:30 – noon, we’ll discuss the history of potpourri and the importance of fragrance through the centuries, then learn the basics of creating a modern potpourri: how to dry herbs and flowers, use essential oils, and select fixatives. Each attendee will make a quart of sweetly scented Potpourri that welcomes the coming of Spring and the joyful return of the growing season! All materials will be provided. This program will be held indoors in one of our well-ventilated classrooms. Group size (10 people) will not exceed current state restrictions. $50 for THBG members, $65 for nonmembers.     Instructor Betsy Williams teaches, lectures and writes about living with herbs and flowers. A lifelong gardener, herb grower and cook, Betsy trained as a florist in Boston and England. She combines her floral, gardening and cooking skills with an extensive knowledge of history, plant lore and seasonal celebrations. An entertaining lecturer, she weaves stories and legends throughout her informative talks and demonstrations. Her gardens, floral work and retail shop have been featured in many books, national magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times, The American Gardener, Victoria, Better Homes and Gardens, Country Living Gardener, Colonial Homes, the Herb Companion, and Traditional Homes.

  • Saturday, February 16, 10:30 am – 12:00 noon – Potpourri: Rotten Pots with a Loving Message

    Potpourri, French for rotten pot, is a fragrant, often beautiful, mix of scented plant material with a long and fascinating history. The Tower Hill Botanic Garden class begins at 10:30 am on February 16 in Tower Hill’s library with a display of books, old and new, on potpourri and stillroom techniques plus a short history of fragrance and the art of using it in the home. Then we will move to the classroom to learn the basics of potpourri making. Each attendee will create a quart of potpourri based on the Language of Flowers to take home and enjoy. It’s Valentine season, what better time to create a beautiful, fragrant blend of rose petals and other sweet smelling herbs that breaths a message of Love? Recipe sheets included. This class is suitable for adults and for families with children 10 years and older. All fragrances used are natural, essential oils. All materials included. $40 for THBG members, $54 for nonmembers.   • Wednesday, April 9, 7:00 pm – Container Gardening with Herbs

    Betsy Williams, a renowned gardener and herb grower, will demonstrate how to use container gardening with herbs and flowers to enhance your daily life. In this Pepperell Garden Club event on Wednesday, April 9, beginning at 7 pm at the Pepperell Senior Center, 37 Nashua Road in Pepperell, she will show us how herbs and flowers can be used in cooking, potpourri, and floral arrangements to add beauty, flavor, meaning and fragrance to seasonal celebrations. $5 fee.   • Thursday, October 1, 10:00 am – 12:30 pm – Apples, Apples, Apples

    Spend a morning at Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, Massachusetts with Betsy Williams, proprietor of The Proper Season in Andover.  Apples, one of our most ancient and useful fruits, have played important parts in fall and winter celebrations for centuries.  Learn the history of this ancient and important fruit.  Make an apple candle to decorate your seasonal table, a spicy apple pomander, fragrant mast balls, apple-cinnamon ornaments, and two quarts of spicy Autumn Apple Potpourri.  Please bring floral scissors and an apron to class – this is a messy class, so be sure to wear old clothes!  Betsy will be giving a separate class in the afternoon (Glorious Autumn Pot), so plan to have lunch at Twigs and spend the day.  Cost of the Apples, Apples, Apples program is $50 for Tower Hill members, $55 for non-members.  Register on-line at www.towerhillbg.org.

  • Thursday, September 24, 11:00 a.m. – The Herb Fair

    Please join The Herb Society of America (www.herbsociety.org)  for its 62nd Annual Fair, celebrating herbs. See the glorious garden,and shop at tables featuring fresh herbs and wreaths, jams, jellies and vinegars, potpourri, baked goods, books, plants, and more. We will have a raffle and a delicious herb-filled lunch with our Northeast Unit’s signature Lovage Soup. Admission is free; proceeds support herb gardens in the New York area.
