  • Saturday, May 20, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm – All About Pots, Potting, and Soil Types

    The Cactus and Succulent Society of Massachusetts will meet on Saturday, May 20 from 1 – 4 at the Norfolk Public Library, 2 Liberty Lane in Norfolk, Massachusetts. Every once in a while it’s a good idea to step back and review the basic necessities and requirements of our favorite plants. Just in time for potting season, the May program will do just that. CSSM Emeritus Member Art Scarpa (a past speaker with the Garden Club of the Back Bay) will lead an interactive session exploring all aspects of potting. Topics include Pots (plastic, glazed, ceramic, hypertufa, terra cotta), Soil Components (sand, gravel, potting soil, volcanic rock, and more), customizing your mix, potting, and repotting.   • Saturday, October 23, 10 a.m. – 3:00 pm – Orchid Growing Clinic

    Once again Historic New England will feature orchids at the Lyman Estate Greenhouses in Waltham, Massachusetts on Saturday, October 23 at 10 a.m.  Bring up to three orchid plants for evaluation by experienced horticulturists. Get advice on maintaining healthy blooming plants. Other services offered include repotting and educational handouts about orchids. Books, pots, and growing supplies are for sale.   • Thursday, October 8, 3:30 – 5:30 pm – Seed Safari

    The New England Wild Flower Society is sponsoring a family program entitled Seed Safari – Study and Collect Seeds, on Thursday, October 8, from 3:30 – 5:30 at the Garden in the Woods in Framingham.  Seeds explode like grenades, shoot like cannons, stick like glue, float like feathers, all in an effort to disperse themselves.  Bonnie Drexler shows how to collect seeds from around the Garden and study them, using all of your senses as well as powerful stereo-microscopes.  Make a seed display to take home and plant some pots of wildflower, shrub, and tree seeds to sprout in the spring.  $12 for members of NEWFS, $14 for non-members.  Pre-registration is necessary.  You may phone 508-877-7630, ext. 3303, or email registrar@newenglandWILD.org.  For additional information log on to www.newfs.org.

  • Through December 31, 2009 – Taking Root: The Growing Business of Gardening in Pots in the 1800’s

    Now on display in the Visitor Center at the entrance to Old Sturbridge Village, this exhibit entitled Taking Root: The Growing Business of Gardening in Pots in the 1800’s,  invites exploration of the art and business of gardening in flowerpots in 19th-century New England. The thriving world of gardening in pots in early New England is shown through a series of vibrant and colorful vignettes. The depictions range from the rough industriousness of a potter’s shop to the refined elegance of a Victorian parlor, and to all of the worlds in between.   • Saturday, June 13, 11 – 3 – Elm Bank Plant Sale

    From 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM this Saturday, Joe Kunkel, horticulturalist extraordinaire, and David Fiske, Mass Hort’s Gardens Curator, will be on hand to show our great selection of plants for sale and to answer any questions you may have.

    EchnaceaThe plant sale will be outside the Greenhouse area of our site. You’ll find a wide selection of annuals and perennials, many brand new to the area.  On hand are new varieties of petunias, Vinca, and many unusual species.  Most plants are in 4″ pots at $2 a piece with a special tray price of 15 for $20.  You can mix and match on full trays.

    VincaWe also have a wide selection of perennials in gallon containers at the great price of $8 or six in tray at $35.  You’ll find brand new varieties of Achillea and Echinacea that are being seen in the latest horticultural magazines.  We also have plenty of tried and true favorites as well.

    So if you are still looking for plants for your garden and you want beautiful specimens at a great price, come down to Elm Bank this Saturday for a rewarding experience.
