  • Thursday, July 9, 9:30 am – 11:30 am – Angela Moore Fashion Show & Champagne Brunch

    The Preservation Society of Newport County and nationally known designer Angela Moore host a fashion show and brunch at Rosecliff, 548 Bellevue Avenue in Newport. This year marks Angela’s 16th show and the second year of the special collaboration with the Preservation Society. All proceeds from this debut event will benefit the Preservation Society’s mission to protect, preserve and present its exceptional collection of house museums and landscapes.

    The theme of the show will be Fashion Through the Decades, celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Preservation Society.  The show will include an exclusive exhibit of iconic fashions from the Preservation Society’s collection, dating from 1945 to the present, plus the latest in resort fashions modeled by Newport style stars and VIP guests.. In addition to showing her own new collection and debuting limited edition Newport Forever jewelry, the show will also feature other well-known designers including Manuel Canovas, Just Madras, and Jack Rogers.

    The doors of Rosecliff will open at 9 a.m. Guests are invited to have their picture taken on the “Red Carpet” staircase of Rosecliff prior to enjoying cocktails on the terrace before proceeding to the ballroom for the fashion show and brunch.

    Seating is limited. Admission is $90 for Preservation Society members and $95 for non-members, and includes the Fashion Show, Champagne Brunch, a $25 Angela Moore Gift Certificate and an exclusive package ticket to tour another Preservation Society property, The Elms (1901), and take the behind the scenes Servant Life Tour.

    Be a part of this much-anticipated festive event that kicks off the Newport summer season on Friday, June 24, from 6 – 9 at Rosecliff, in Newport, Rhode Island. Enjoy a delicious cocktail buffet while viewing the fresh floral arrangements and horticultural extravaganzas, shopping the Oceanside Boutiques and Gardeners’ Marketplace, mingling with friends and making new ones.   • Friday, June 24 – Sunday, June 26 – Newport Flower Show: Entertaining, Newport Style

    The Newport Flower Show is pleased to celebrate its 16th year as America’s premier summer flower show, held on the historic grounds of Rosecliff.  Entertaining, Newport Style will welcome visitors with a grace and sophistication as unique as the city herself. Newport has long been a summer haven and entertaining here is an art form.

    Newporters have always taken great pride in their landscapes, considered central to summer life and entertaining. It was, in fact , the estate gardeners of Newport who came together in 1890 to form a horticultural society and offered prizes in what was Newport’s first organized flower show. This year’s show pays homage to these horticultural artists by offering a class specifically for the current estate gardeners of Newport.

    Designers will have the opportunity to learn the latest trends in floral design from Kevin Ylvisaker, international lecturer and cutting-edge Design Director for Oasis. And, what is a party without cake? The organizers are thrilled to have Sylvia Weinstock, the legendary cake artist world renowned for her pastiche flowers. She will share with guests how she integrates flowers into her work and her love of stylish entertaining. The Photography Division continues to draw entries from across the nation and the schedule will include classes on digital enhancements as a design element. The Children’s Division will delight the youngest hosts and hostesses.

    As always, shopping at the Oceanside Boutiques and the Garden Marketplace are a much anticipated Newport tradition. The Opening Night Party will launch the summer season in Newport with a cocktail buffet, live music and other surprises.

  • Wednesdays, June 16 – July 21, 10:00 am – Great Newport Landscapes, 1840 – 1940

    The Preservation Society of Newport County and Rhode Island School of Design Continuing Education present a six-week landscape course, led by John R. Tschirch, Architectural Historian of the Preservation Society, beginning June 16 through July 21.  Each session will begin at 10:00 am at 424 Bellevue Avenue in Newport.

    This course will examine the landmark landscapes of Newport, created during the 19th and early 20th centuries, when the city was one of the most fashionable summer resorts in the nation. Known as the “Eden of America,” Newport and its environs have a rich garden design and horticultural heritage. Lectures and site visits will consider Newport landscapes by leading figures in American design and planning, horticulture, the history of plant and tree collection and propagation, species identification, garden architecture and sculpture, preservation practices, and stylistic elements of Victorian and Gilded Age period landscapes.

  • Thursday, June 11, 6 pm – The Preservation Society of Newport County Annual Meeting

    Please join The Preservation Society of Newport County at its Annual Meeting Thursday, June 11, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. at Rosecliff, 548 Bellevue Avenue, Newport, Rhode Island.  Enjoy a snapshot of the past year and the year to come. Following the election of trustees, the Laurel Awards will be presented, including one for Horticulture given to volunteers Denise Aguiar, Marilyn Archibald, Blake Billings, Brian Burns, Charles Gardner, Lillian Kimball, Sheila Lang, and Raymond Picozzi for weeding, watering, and working tirelessly in the Society’s many gardens.  A light reception of wine and cheese will follow on the terrace.  For more information, log on to www.newportmansions.org.

  • Friday, June 26 – Sunday, June 28 – The 2009 Newport Flower Show – Glorious Green: The Natural Path

    The Newport Flower Show celebrates its 14th year as America’s premier summer flower show.  Glorious Green, The Natural Path, will lead us to discover the extraordinary beauty of nature, as well as how to preserve and protect these treasures.  All proceeds from the Newport Flower Show are dedicated to the ongoing restoration and maintenance of the Preservation Society of Newport County’s 88 acres of gardens and landscapes.  The show will take place at Rosecliff, and the hours are Friday, 10:30 – 5, Saturday and Sunday 9 – 5, with an opening night cocktail party on Friday June 26 from 6 – 9.  Tickets may be purchased on line at www.newportmansions.org.  Don’t miss the Butterfly House, created exclusively for the Show by landscape architect Charles Carberry on the front lawn of Rosecliff.  Walk through a gazebo filled with butterfly-friendly plants and see thousands of indigenous butterflies, including monarchs, swallowtails and painted ladies, making a unique and colorful official entrance to the Newport Flower Show.  Each day of the 2009 Newport Flower Show offers guests opportunities to enjoy judged horticultural specimens and floral designs, special garden exhibitions, free lectures and demonstrations, as well as wonderful shopping experiences in both the Oceanside Boutiques and the new Gardeners’ Marketplace.  Tickets are also available for special luncheons, lectures and workshops.  You’ll find that there are many choices as you select which ticket or package offers you the best opportunity to fully enjoy all the hues of Glorious Green, The Natural Path.
