    Autumn is a great time to assess your woody plants for shape and structure. This demonstration/workshop at Berkshire Botanical Garden on Saturday, September 25 from 10 – 1, will focus on pruning, including: when, why and how to shape, renovate, train or rejuvenate your woody plants. Learn about pruning tools, timing, and specific techniques available to the home gardener. Pruning techniques specifically for both evergreen and deciduous hedges will be covered.

    Ken Gooch Massachusetts Certified Arborist, is the Department of Environmental Management’s Forest Health Specialist for Berkshire County. He is an educator and lectures widely on a variety of topics including forest health, pruning, and arboriculture.   • Saturday, April 3, 9 am – noon – Pruning Basics

    Learn the why’s and how’s of pruning – why to prune, if you even need to prune, when to prune, and what cuts to make.  Wellesley College Botanic Gardens Senior Horticulturist Tricia Diggins teaches you to make cutting edge decisions about nearly every pruning job from house plants to large tres.  She explores with you how these general principles relate to specific plants like flowering shrubs, evergreens, older trees, young plants and fruit trees.  Approximately half the class time will be indoors and the remaiinder will be outside in the Hunnewell Arboretum and Alexandra Botanic Gardens, looking at the pruning needs of a variety of trees and shrubs.  The Wellesley College Hunnewell Arboretum can be damp under foot in early spring.  Please dress appropriately for the weather.  Class number HOR 10 080, WCFH members $20, non members $25.  To register, or for directions, log on to www.wellesley.edu/WCFH, or email horticulture@wellesley.edu.

  • Saturday, November 14, 12:30 – 2:30 pm – Taking Cuttings: Propagating Your Own Woody Plants

    Back at the Berkshire Botanical Garden in West Stockbridge, Massachusetts by popular demand! Join woody plant specialist Adam Wheeler of Broken Arrow Nursery on Saturday, November 14, from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm,  for a workshop focused on hardwood and evergreen propagation. This workshop will cover how to collect, prepare and propagate evergreens and other woody plants by cuttings. Set at the best time of the year for collecting, participants will learn techniques needed for insuring successful rooting. Cultivation requirements, timing and care of easily propagated varieties will be covered. Take home a selection of unusual deciduous and evergreen plant material in a simple propagator to grow on. Adam Wheeler is the Propagation and New Plant Development Manager for Broken Arrow Nursery located in Hamden, Ct. a specialty nursery with a focus on woody plants. He teaches wood plant propagation workshops throughout New England. This demonstration/workshop, to be held at the Berkshire Botanical Gardens in Stockbridge, Massachusetts on Saturday, September 26, from 10 am – 1 pm, will focus on pruning, including: when, why and how to shape, renovate, train or rejuvenate your woody plants. Learn about pruning tools, timing, and specific techniques available to the home gardener. Participants will learn the basics of pruning, including rejuvenating an old lilac and shaping a small flowering tree. Pruning techniques specifically for hedges both evergreen and deciduous will be covered.   • Thursday, August 6, 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. – Pruning Clinic

    Join the staff at Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, 23 Science Center Road, Holderness, New Hampshire, on Thursday, August 6, from 9 to 10:30 in the morning, to learn about the selection, use, and maintenance of pruning tools (including sharpening of pruners and loppers).  Discover how, when, and why to prune flowers, shrubs, and trees with an opportunity to observe the techniques in Kirkwood Gardens.
