  • Wednesdays through Sundays, September 27 – October 27 – Naumkeag Pumpkin Show

    The Trustees invites you to tour the Naumkeag Pumpkin Show, which opens Friday, September 27, and will be on view Wednesdays through Sundays through October 27. This is an outdoor event. Be prepared to walk across unpaved pathways on uneven terrain through the woods and gardens. Trails may be muddy or icy at times, sturdy boots are recommended. Dress appropriately for the weather that day. Costumes are encouraged!   • Saturday, October 22, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm – Embellished Pumpkin Workshop

    Decorate a real mini-pumpkin using cut flowers, succulents, air plants, moss and foliage.  Your adorable embellished pumpkin will last for several months! This New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill workshop takes place October 22 from 1 – 3 with instructor Mary Beth Hayes.

    Mary Beth is an avid gardener and floral designer who began studying floral design so she could bring the beauty of the garden into her home. She’s taken classes with the Mass Horticultural Society and Cass School of Floral Design in Watertown, MA. She has studied with noted floral designers Francoise Weeks, Holly Chapple and Hitomi Gilliam. Mary Beth loves to share the techniques she’s learned with others so we can all “play with flowers” and create beautiful, natural flower arrangements and more.

    $80 Member Adult; $95 Adult; $105 Adult Pair (Registration includes admission to the Garden) If you sign up as a PAIR your will receive ONE SET of supplies. A pair ticket is designed for two people to work together to make ONE PROJECT. All materials will be provided.   • Saturday, October 24, 10:00 am – 11:30 am – Pumpkinfest

    Celebrate the fall harvest on October 24 from 10 – 11:30 at the Boston Nature Center by creating your own carved pumpkin, playing pumpkin games, and enjoying a fall scavenger hunt. Learn about the history of pumpkins and the Jack-O-Lantern story. Register at least a week in advance to ensure a pumpkin of your own.

    PLEASE NOTE: This program will be conducted in accordance with current Municipal, State, and Mass Audubon Covid-19 protocols. Groups are limited to 10 pre-registered adults. Participants are required to wear a face covering and follow social distancing guidelines. A detailed confirmation letter will be emailed 24 hours before the program.

  • Sunday, October 14, 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm – Embellished Pumpkins

    Join Tower Hill Botanic Garden and instructor Mary Beth Hayes on Sunday, October 14 from 1 – 2:30, and decorate white mini-pumpkins with succulents, moss, cut flowers and berries. Learn techniques of using floral adhesives and plants to create a long-lasting decorative pumpkin. All supplies will be provided. Registrants are encouraged to bring their own clippers. Let’s create pretty pumpkins!

    Mary Beth (MB) Hayes is a freelance floral designer in Chelmsford, MA, who focuses on seasonal, nature-based design. She has studied with notable floral designers including Francoise Weeks, Hitomi Gilliam and Holly Heider Chapple.   • Saturday, October 21, 10:00 am – Pumpkin Decoupage Workshop

    What could be more “autumn in New England” than pumpkins decorated with fall leaves. On Saturday, October 21 beginning at 10 am, enjoy a morning of family crafts, where we will be decorating our pumpkins with colorful leaves gathered at Green Animals. Join us for a garden walk and decoupage! The workshop takes place at Green Animals Topiary Garden, 380 Cory’s Lane in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and is presented by the Preservation Society of Newport County.

  • Saturday, October 24, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Heirloom Pumpkin Harvest Centerpiece

    Make an autumn centerpiece that can be used for both Halloween and Thanksgiving, in this Tower Hill Botanic Garden class led by Betsy Williams on Saturday, October 24 from 10 – 12. Heirloom pumpkins are actually a hard-shelled squash. Flatter then Halloween pumpkins, they come in shades of celadon, forest green, cream and peach. An uncut heirloom pumpkin makes an elegant base for a striking harvest arrangement of richly colored dried flowers, herbs, grains, pods, nuts, mosses, berries and preserved leaves. The finished arrangement can be used as a harvest table accent for many weeks. All plant material, glues and Heirloom pumpkins are supplied by the instructor.   • Monday, October 20, 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm – God of the Gourds: Cooking with Pumpkin

    Pumpkin patches provide the base for this Boston Center for Adult Education class offering dedicated to the gorgeous gourds known for their sweet, autumnal aromatics. We’ll bypass the traditional pumpkin custard pie and head into unchartered pumpkin territory as we explore breads, delicate pastries, and cupcakes based on this bright orange seasonal vegetable-masked-as-fruit. Sweetening it up with cinnamon and making it more savory with salts, you’ll have a cornucopia of pumpkin feasting in this hands-on class. This course, taught by Dustin Rennells on Monday, October 20, from 6 – 9 at the BCAE building, 122 Arlington Street in Boston, will include alcohol and nuts in various recipes, please plan accordingly.   • Wednesday, November 16, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Botany of Thanksgiving

    Pumpkins, squash, peas, beans, turnips, carrots, potatoes, parsnip, spinach, corn, apples, pecans, cabbage, and more are common components of a Thanksgiving feast. But have you considered these fruits, tubers, nuts, and vegetables from a botanical perspective? In a novel analysis of this traditional meal, Professor Pamela Diggle, Evolutionary Biologist at University of Colorado and Harvard University, will open your eyes to the plant anatomy and physiology that preceded the creation of, say, your grandmother’s sweet potato-marshmallow casserole or your uncle’s savory succotash.  This Arnold Arboretum class will be held Wednesday, November 16, from 7 – 8:30 in the Weld Hill Research Building at the Arboretum.  Free, but registration requested.  Visit www.arboretum.harvard.edu for registration and more information.

  • Through October, 2012: Urban Garden Art Installation

    The Rose Kennedy Greenway announces a sixteen month art installation. The Fort Point Channel Parks have been transformed. The recent installation of three contemporary sculptures based on botanical forms, together suggest a fantastic garden amidst the urban-scape of Boston. The Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy, deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum and Boston Properties are proud to present Urban Garden, a sixteen month exhibition of sculpture on the Greenway.  Urban Garden features the work of internationally acclaimed artists, Tom Otterness, John Ruppert (his Pumpkins is below, in a photo by C. Ely) and James Surls and is curated by deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum with generous support from Boston Properties. The exhibition can be viewed in Fort Port Channel Parks through October 2012.

  • Saturday, March 13, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Extreme Pumpkin Growing

    Oh, boy, you’ve been waiting for this!  Join woody plant guru and plant geek Adam Wheeler of Broken Arrow Nursery for a fun and informative look into the world of competitive pumpkin growing.  Learn how to grow plants in the cucurbita family into the biggest and best fruits possible.  Ones you will never be able to lift yourself.  Although the lecture will focus on how to grow extra large pumpkins, it will also inform gardeners about improving growing conditions for other pumpkin relatives, including melons, squash, and cucumbers.  Adam will share his special pumpkin seeds for the upcoming growing season (he’s that confident!).  The lecture will take place at Berkshire Botanical Gardens, and costs $18 for BBG members, $24 for non members.  Log on to www.berkshirebotanical.org for more information and directions.
