    Join the Athol Bird & Nature Club at 7 pm on October 11 at the Millers River Environmental Center to hear Jim Morelly speak of his extraordinary adventures. What started out as casual hiking in Quabbin turned into a passion. Hiking thousands of miles in the Quabbin Reservoir Reservation, carrying a camera, has presented unique wildlife experiences. Nature can be wonderful, and it can also be hard. Join Jim as he shares some of his most memorable stories. He has had a passion for nature since childhood.     The Southern Connecticut Valley is the foremost reptile and amphibian biodiversity hot spot in Massachusetts.  Join State Herpetologist Michael T. Jones on Sunday, January 29 at 2 pm for a presentation on these fascinating creatures.  The free talk will take place at the Quabbin Visitor Center on Ware Road in Belchertown at the Quabbin Reservoir, and all ages are welcome.  Please call 413-323-7221 for more information.

  • Saturday, May 25, 7:00 am – Exploring Quabbin: Prescott Peninsula

    The Athol Bird & Nature Club is sponsoring a unique field trip for those of you energetic enough to get up at the crack of dawn on Saturday, May 25.  Meet Larry Therrien at the DCR headquarters parking lot, off Route 202 in New Salem, Massachusetts at 7 am for this natural history exploration of Interior Quabbin.  The trip is limited to ten participants, with preference given to ABNC members (it’s worth joining!) and a reservation is required.  Email Larry at larrytherrien@hotmail.com to sign up and for more information.  Image from quabbinbirdingandbeyond.blogspot.com.

  • Saturday, September 8, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm – Quabbin to Monadnock: The Athol Link

    On Saturday, September 8, beginning at 9 am, Dan Bolton leads this moderate six-mile hike through an Athol gem, part of the new Quabbin to Monadnock trail system now under development. Meet at the Bearsden parking area, at the end of Bearsden Rd., Athol, with some cars to be left there. Car pool to South Royalston and hike south through the Thousand Acre Brook area and the Bearsden. See great views of the Millers River and Thousand Acre Falls.
