  • Sunday, April 8, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Growing Shiitake Mushrooms

Rachel Brinkman has been growing mushrooms for several years at the Arnold Arboretum and in the past has worked with Cornell University’s Cooperative Extension, teaching woodlot owners how they can farm their own gourmet mushrooms. All that is needed is a bit of shade and some inoculated logs to construct a crib that can produce a variety of mushroom types. On Sunday, April 8 at 10 am in the Hunnewell Building Garage, Rachel will share what she has learned and guide you through the process of drilling logs, inoculating them with spawn, and then sealing them with wax. She will discuss care for a bountiful crop. Each participant will go home with an Arboretum-grown shiitake-inoculated log readied for mushroom production. Fee $45 Arboretum member; $58 nonmember. Register at http://my.arboretum.harvard.edu or call 617-384-5277.

  • Tuesday, June 24, 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM – Small Shrubs for the Home Garden

Small shrubs add texture and dimension to the landscape through multiple seasons. Whether grouped with larger shrubs and trees or mixed into a perennial border, they can create a solid-looking ground layer that can tie the entire planting together or can provide points of interest. Horticultural technologist Rachel Brinkman, Horticultural Technologist at the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, will lead this walk through the Arboretum landscape on Tuesday, June 24, from 4 – 6, pointing out a variety of smaller shrubs, both deciduous and evergreen, with suggestions for their use in the home landscape. Fee: $20 Arboretum member, $30 nonmember. Register online at https://my.arboretum.harvard.edu/SelectDate.aspx. (Eastern leatherwood pictured below.)

  • Saturday, October 26, 11:30 am – 1:00 pm – All Eyes on Invasive Insects

Do invasive insects threaten the Arnold Arboretum’s valuable tree species? Join Rachel Brinkman, Horticultural Apprentice, at the Arborway Gate of the Arnold Arboretum on Saturday, October 26 at 11:30 am on a tour to learn more about the Asian Long Horn Beetle (ALB), Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), Hemlock Wooly Adelgid (below), and other pests. Learn about susceptible tree species and how to identify these insects before they infest trees. Neither EAB nor ALB have been found in the Arboretum, but close monitoring is critical. Bring binoculars if you have them; a limited number will be available to borrow.  In case of inclement weather, contact 617.384.5209. This activity is free, but you may register at www.my.arboretum.harvard.edu.
