  • December 21, 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm – March 20 – Bright Lights for Winter Nights

    The Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy is pleased to announce plans to bring more light and cheer to the Greenway beginning December 21, the winter solstice, and continuing through the spring equinox.

    Bright Lights for Winter Nights will feature creative lighting elements that highlight the Greenway’s four distinctive park designs while unifying over a mile of the Greenway’s natural beauty with a varied display of festive lighting.

    The first display will begin Monday the 21st at 4 pm in the Wharf District Parks when the iconic Light Blades will display a newly choreographed rhythm of color and pattern.  The display will change each week for the next three months, so keep coming back!

  • Saturday, October 16, 12:00 noon – 4:00 pm – Harvest Festival & Benefit for Emerson Hospital Pediatric Care

    Verrill Farms hosts an afternoon of family fun in the fields beside the farm stand at 11 Wheeler Road in Concord on Saturday, October 16, from noon – 4 pm.  There will be games, a raffle, clown and face painting, Giddy Up Pony rides, hay rides, live music by Back Eddy Blue Grass, and food available a la carte, all a benefit for the Emerson Hospital Pediatric Care center.  For more information log on to www.verrillfarm.com.

  • Tuesday, May 25, 10:30 am – 1:30 pm – Metro East & Metro West District Annual Meeting

    The Garden Club of the Back Bay, Inc. is a member of the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, Metro East District.  The Annual Meeting of Metro East and Metro West District Clubs will be held Tuesday, May 25, from 10:30 am – 1:30 pm at Elm Bank in Wellesley.  The meeting will feature a floral demonstration by a designer from Winston Flowers, along with a boutique, lunch and raffle.  The price for members of Metro East and Metro West clubs is $35 per person, and guests may attend for $40 per person.  To register, send a check payable to GCFMA Inc to Alisa Billings, 12 Woodridge Road, Dover, MA 02030, and please note your garden club affiliation, if any, on your check.  Garden Club of the Back Bay members will receive a notice, with car pooling information, in the mail soon.  Photo below by Karen Harvey Cox.

  • Saturday, April 17, 8:00 am – 4:00 pm – Cape Cod Horticultural Conference

    Come to the Barnstable High School Performing Arts Center, 744 West Main Street in Hyannis on Saturday, April 17, for a full day conference beginning at 8:00 am – 4:00 pm, sponsored by the Master Gardener Association of Cape Cod.  The program will feature:

    Rick Darke, The Wild Garden: A fresh look at the wild garden concept and will illustrate why it is the most enjoyable, sensible approach for livable, ecologically sustainable modern landscapes;

    Vincent Simeone, Wonders of the Winter Landscape: How to enhance the aesthetic value and interest of the garden by using horticultural treasures such as winter fruiting plants, broadleaved evergreens, conifers and trees with interesting bark;

    C.L. Fornari, The Top 25: 25 plants that she thinks you should know about, along with the 25 most interesting/amusing/useful bits of gardening information she has learned in over 25 years of gardening.

    Book signings with speakers, lunch, marketplace, and a raffle will be part of the day.   • Saturday, November 7, 2-4 pm – Holiday Floral and Decor Demonstration

    The Millis Garden Club invites you to a Holiday Floral and Decor Demonstration this Saturday, November 7, from 2 – 4 pm, at the St. Thomas Large Hall/Rectory, Route 109, Millis, Massachusetts (between 972 and 984 Main Street).  Master Floral Designer Barbara Wysk of Wysk Designs will create beautiful arrangements suitable for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and all arrangements will be raffled off.

    Barbara’s world is flowers.  Her sense of design and her eye for color is extraordinary.  Her mind runs full of creative thoughts 24/7.  She’s ingenious on recycling objects found around the home into her designs. Her motto is “If it holds water, it’s fair game” and she will demonstrate that during this program.
    One does not have to be a floral arranger to enjoy this program. She will offer many tidbits of information so that everyone can incorporate something into their upcoming holiday tables.

    Festive holiday savories and sweets will be served.  $5 donation at the door suggested.

  • Thursday, November 12, 10:00 am – Garden Design Luncheon at Blithewold Mansion

  • Saturday, October 17, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm – Falmouth Cranberry Harvest & Farm Festival

    Come enjoy an old fashioned family celebration of a cranberry bog being wet harvested before your eyes!  On Saturday, October 17 (rain date Sunday, October 18), between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm, come to the  John Parker Bogs (between Route 28 and Sandwich Road) in East Falmouth.  This event is free.  Taste the many homemade cranberry treats – baked goodies, cranberry juices, cranberry breads, jellies, relishes, etc.  See an antique cranberry separator remove the chaff from your own bag of fresh berries.  There will be delicious Portuguese food available under the tent while you listen to the Falmouth Fiddlers, and ’50’s and ’60’s music by The Grand Daddios.  Reminisce with experienced local farmers and hear their stories.  Take a guided bog walk describing historical remnants, bog plants, and animals with an experienced guide.   • Tuesday, September 15, 7:30 – 9:30 pm – Annual Orchid Auction

    The Massachusetts Orchid Society will hold its annual orchid auction on Tuesday, September 15, from 7:30 – 9:30 pm at the Waltham Field Station, 240 Beaver Street in Waltham, Massachusetts.

    The Massachusetts Orchid Society is a non-profit educational organization of individuals from all walks of life, who share an interest in orchids. These interests range from the simple appreciation of orchids as beautiful flowers to highly technical involvement in orchid breeding and taxonomy. Most MOS members are active orchid growers, growing their own plants under conditions ranging from window sills to artificial light gardens to automated greenhouses.

    The MOS holds monthly meetings throughout the year, encompassing a broad range of topics. The program for a typical meeting includes an orchid show table, plant sales, social time with refreshments, a short business meeting, a presentation by a guest speaker usually with slides, discussion, and Q&A, and a raffle for orchid plants.  Annual membership is $20.  For more information, log on to www.massorchid.org.
