  • Wednesdays, January 20, 27, and February 3, 7:00 – 9:00 pm – Flower Arranging: Simple and Tasteful

    Indoor floral arrangements during the winter months are most successful when you incorporate flowers or branches that are interesting to look at. Winter is not the season to focus on bunches of blooming flowers, but rather to create airy, simple, and tasteful arrangements. In this class you will discuss  choices for long-lasting winter arrangements, the use of unusual vases, and which flowers will work best. You’ll practice a variety of floral arrangement styles, using everyday and unusual flowers and branches for tall and thin, or short and subtle looks. You will discuss equipment and reference materials used by florists, how to pair your arrangement with a room, and how to best care for your flowers before, during, and after they have been arranged. Please bring a few vases, a pair of scissors, glue sticks, and a glue gun to class. The instructor will provide the fresh flowers and branches, low-floral dishes, floral tape, and wires. A $50 materials fees is payable to the instructor at the first class.  This series of three classes, to be held Wednesday January 20, January 27, and February 3 at Brookline High School, is sponsored by Brookline Adult Education, and the fee for the three classes is $85.  You may register on line at www.brooklineadulted.org, or by calling 617-730-2700.

  • Wednesdays, October 7 & 14, 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm – Introduction to Home Orcharding

    With careful planning, home orcharding can be a low-maintenance means to grow lots of nutritious food in small and challenging spaces. This class would be useful to anyone who has a little space and wants to grow fruit, including pomes, stone fruits, berries and nuts. The class covers the process of planning, planting, and caring for a home orchard. The beginner home orchardist will receive a step-by-step guide to evaluating your space, selecting the right plant and nursery, developing a maintenance plan, and an introduction to reference materials.  The class will take place on two successive Wednesdays, October 7 and 14, from 6 pm to 9 pm at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive, Boylston, Massachusetts, and will be taught by Benjamin Crouch, proprietor of Land of Plenty Organic Landscaping.  Cost is $45 for Tower Hill members, $50 for non-members.  To register, log on to www.towerhillbg.org.  Last day of registration is September 30.

  • Wednesdays, September 23 – October 14, 7 -9 pm – Inexpensive and Beautiful Flower Arrangements

    If you would like to learn the secrets behind the creation of stunning floral arrangements, this part traditional, part contemporary course is for you. Through Brookline Community Education, you’ll be introduced to simple flower arrangement concepts, and learn the basics as a creative platform. You will learn about the wide variety of seasonal choices available, properties and shapes of cut flowers and branches, and how to arrange impressive animal or unusual centerpieces in cost effective ways. We will discuss equipment and reference materials used by florists, and how to best care for your flowers before, during, and after they have been arranged. Please bring a pair of scissors, glue sticks, and a glue gun to class. The instructor will provide fresh flowers, oasis, low-floral dishes, floral tape, and wires. A $50 materials fees is payable to the instructor at the first class. The class will be held at Brookline High School, and is limited to 16 attendees.
