    Join The Association for Garden Communicators (GWA) on Friday, October 13 from 9 – 3:30 at Blithewold Gardens in Bristol, Rhode Island, for a day long seminar and garden tour to help develop a better marketing plan for yourself, your business, your not for profit, or horticulture at large.   • Saturday, January 9, 12:30 pm – Annual Nepenthes Cutting and Propagation Workshop

  • Saturday, October 4, 11:00 am – 4:00 pm, and Sunday, October 5, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm – 11th Annual Fall Carnivorous Plant Show

    The award winning New England Carnivorous Plant Society (NECPS) will again be hosting the Fall Carnivorous Plant Show at the Roger Williams Park Botanical Center, 1 Floral Avenue, Providence RI, on Saturday and Sunday, October 4 and 5. Plant lovers and all those who enjoy something different will be able to get up close to hundreds of carnivorous plants exhibited by the members of the NECPS. Featured plants will include pitcher plants from Malaysia with traps the size of softballs that are capable of eating lizards and mice. There will also be sundews from Australia ranging from the size of a dime to 12+ inches high and the ever-popular Venus Fly trap. For you native plant lovers, NECPS will also display carnivorous plants that grow locally in Rhode Island and throughout New England.

    This is the largest collection of carnivorous plants displayed yearly on the east coast and the most popular show at the Botanical Center.  Visit the Venus Fly Trap feeding area where you can observe up close how these plants devour insects. Plants and growing accessories will be available for purchase for both novice and experienced growers from carnivorous plant vendors and the NECPS. The permanent carnivorous plant bog exhibit will also be available for viewing. Society members will be present both days to explain how the plants feed, what they eat, where they live, and how they can be grown and enjoyed at home. Admission to the show is FREE with the purchase of regular admission to the Roger Williams Park Botanical Center.   • Saturday, April 12, 12:30 pm – Orchids That Grow With Carnivorous Plants

  • Saturday, January 11, 12:30 pm – Annual Nepenthes Cutting Class

    The next meeting of the New England Carnivorous Plant Society will be held on January 11, 2014 at 12:30 pm at the Roger Williams Park Botanical Center, 1000 Elmwood Avenue, Providence, Rhode Island.

    This meeting will be their Annual Nepenthes Cutting Class.  Members and friends are encouraged to bring any overgrown Nepenthes that could use a little cutting back.  Following instruction on taking Nepenthes vine cuttings and tips for sucessful Nepenthes cutting propagation,  members will have the opportunity to take cuttings from the plants brought in to bring home and grow.  This is only possible when members bring in and allow others to take cuttings of their overgrown plants.  So if you have a plant that is vining and needs a little cutting please consider bringing it in!

    Join Ecological Landscaping Association and URI Research Associate Kate Venturini on Tuesday, September 20, from 10 – 12:30, for a unique insider tour of the Roger Williams Park Botanical Center complex in Providence, Rhode Island, an urban oasis nestled in the heart of the 427-acre park designed by Horace Cleveland in 1878.  Through a partnership between the URI Outreach Center and the Providence Parks Department, the Botanical Center complex is being transformed both inside and out as a model for sustainable urban horticulture.  Located on an island surrounded by man made ponds, the complex features a newly designed and installed rain garden to capture greenhouse roof runoff, Rhode Island’s largest community garden, the future site of a permaculture food forest, extensive outdoor display gardens featuring native and sustainable plants, and the largest public indoor display gardens in New England (approximately 12,000 square feet of greenhouses.)  Join Kate as she shares her insight into the successful planning and management of indoor and outdoor showcases, illustrating the latest and greatest urban horticultural and agricultural practices.  For more information, email ela.info@comcast.net, or call 617-436-5838.  $20 for ELA members, $25 for non-members.  The address of Roger Williams Park is 1000 Elmwood Avenue in Providence.
