  • Thursday, May 19, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – All About Roses

    David Cannistraro, past President of the New England Rose Society, will discuss a selection of rose types, and how to properly plant them, prune them, and protect them through the winter, at The Gardens at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley on Thursday, May 19 beginning at 7 pm. He’ll also review the best methods to deadhead and fertilize, and include a comparison of natural and over-the-counter sprays. A fun program to make rose growing easy, this program will be hands-on with potted rose demonstrations.

    Current Rose Society President Teresa Mosher, will also be on site, selling and signing her book, A Year In My Rose Garden.

  • Saturday, May 7, 9:00 am – Roses! Roses! Roses!

    Manuel Mendes, American Rose Society Certified Master Consulting Rosarian, will present a free seminar at Weston Nurseries, 93 East Main Street in Hopkinton, on Saturday, May 7, beginning at 9 am, on everything you need to know about roses.

    Weston Nurseries is delighted to welcome Manny Mendes for a discussion and demonstration all about roses. Manny Mendes will cover the most important aspects of choosing, planting and caring for your roses. He will teach you about the different types of roses and recommend the best cultivars for our region. Come learn everything you need to know about how to grow roses and how easy it is to include them in your landscape. Rose growing can be a rewarding hobby as well as a reliable way to add spectacular color and style to your garden.

    Manny Mendes has been growing roses for more than four decades and currently has over 250 rose varieties growing in his yard.   • Friday, April 2, 6:30 pm – Complexities of American Rose Species: Their Taxonomy to DNA

    Dr. Walter H. Lewis, Emeritus and University Research Ethnobotanist, Washington University in St. Louis and Missouri Botanical Garden, and the 2010 New England Botanical Club Distinguished Speaker, will give a talk on the Complexities of American Rose Species: Their Taxonomy to DNA on Friday, April 2, in the Lecture Hall (Room 102) of the Fairchild Biochemistry Building at 7 Divinity Avenue in Cambridge.  The Fairchild Biochemistry Building is part of the main campus near Harvard Square and is between Busch Hall and the Peabody Museum.  For specific directions log on to www.rhodora.org/Meetings.html.
