  • Wednesday, October 25, 11:00 am – The Breakers Cultural Landscape Report

    John Grove, Landscape Architect, and Leslie Carter, Landscape Architect, Reed Hilderbrand, will speak on Wednesday, October 25 at 11 am at Rosecliff, 548 Bellevue Avenue in Newport.

    The Preservation Society of Newport County commissioned Reed Hilderbrand Landscape Architects of Cambridge, MA in collaboration with Robinson & Associates Landscape Historians of Washington, DC to prepare a Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) for The Breakers. A CLR documents a site’s history and existing conditions, provides an analysis of the landscape’s integrity and significance, and outlines treatment recommendations for the preservation, interpretation and stewardship of the property.   • Wednesday, October 11, 11:00 am – Ernest Bowditch: Out of Olmsted’s Shadow

    The Preservation Society of Newport County will host a lecture on Wednesday, October 11 at 11 am at Rosecliff, 548 Bellevue Avenue in Newport. Jim Donahue, Curator of Historic Landscapes & Horticulture for the Society, will speak on Ernest Bowditch: Out of Olmsted’s Shadow. Ernest W. Bowditch (1850-1918) was a key figure in the evolution of the profession of landscape architecture in the late 19th century. Over a 40-year career, Bowditch’s firm designed over 2,500 projects ranging from Gilded Age estate master plans to designs for planned garden suburbs and civil engineering projects. The Breakers landscape plan helped to launch Bowditch, and he returned to redesign the site over the course of his career. Come and learn about Bowditch, his relationship to the Vanderbilts, and the private paradise they created at The Breakers.

  • Thursday, July 9, 9:30 am – 11:30 am – Angela Moore Fashion Show & Champagne Brunch

    The Preservation Society of Newport County and nationally known designer Angela Moore host a fashion show and brunch at Rosecliff, 548 Bellevue Avenue in Newport. This year marks Angela’s 16th show and the second year of the special collaboration with the Preservation Society. All proceeds from this debut event will benefit the Preservation Society’s mission to protect, preserve and present its exceptional collection of house museums and landscapes.

    The theme of the show will be Fashion Through the Decades, celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Preservation Society.  The show will include an exclusive exhibit of iconic fashions from the Preservation Society’s collection, dating from 1945 to the present, plus the latest in resort fashions modeled by Newport style stars and VIP guests.. In addition to showing her own new collection and debuting limited edition Newport Forever jewelry, the show will also feature other well-known designers including Manuel Canovas, Just Madras, and Jack Rogers.

    The doors of Rosecliff will open at 9 a.m. Guests are invited to have their picture taken on the “Red Carpet” staircase of Rosecliff prior to enjoying cocktails on the terrace before proceeding to the ballroom for the fashion show and brunch.

    Seating is limited.     New England’s premier flower show celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2015 with American Beauty-Timeless Style.  Long before it became home to the Newport Flower Show, Rosecliff was the birthplace of the American Beauty Rose. This iconic flower, which became a symbol of excellence, is the inspiration for our 20th anniversary. Join us to celebrate the classic and timeless style of the American Beauty.     Peter Hatch will be the featured special guest. Peter J. Hatch is a professional gardener and historian with 38 years experience in the restoration, care, and interpretation of historic landscapes. A celebrated author of four books on the gardens of Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, where he served as Director of Gardens and Grounds for 35 years, Hatch has lectured in 36 states on Jefferson and the history of garden plants. Presently, he gardens and botanizes from his home on Lickinghole Creek in Crozet, Virginia, travels extensively to promote his latest work, A Rich Spot of Earth: Thomas Jefferson’s Revolutionary Garden at Monticello, and consults on the installation and maintenance of both public gardens and private estate landscapes.

  • Friday, September 19 – Sunday, September 21 – Newport Mansions Wine & Food Festival

    The 9th Annual Newport Mansions Wine & Food Festival will take place September 19-21, 2014 at The Elms, Rosecliff & Marble House. Presenting Underwriter Food & Wine Magazine has enabled the Preservation Society of Newport County to welcome special guests Martha Stewart and Sara Moulton. Additional guest chefs and wine experts include Jonathan Cartwright, Dan Enos, Michael Ferraro, and Karsten Hart. Festival highlights: a two-day Grand Tasting with hundreds of wines on the lawn of Marble House, celebrity chef appearances and cooking demonstrations, seminars with leading wine experts, Wine & Rosecliff gala celebration, a collectible wine dinner, Newport After Dark party, a winemaker’s brunch, and auctions.   • Tuesdays, July 15 – July 29, 10:30 am – 12:00 noon – Great American Gardens Series at the MFA

    Tuesday mornings July 15-29 (see below for information on individual weeks,) take a break from the summer heat to hear the fascinating stories behind these monumental and luscious gardens, from their inceptions to recent renovations. Experience one of America’s first botanical gardens, Boston’s green oasis, the Public Garden; the magnificent mansion gardens of Newport, Rhode Island; and the gardens of Thomas Jefferson’s iconic Monticello. All sessions will be held in the Remis Auditorium of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston from 10:30 – noon.

    On July 15, Keith Morgan, director of Architectural Studies and professor of American and European Architecture at Boston University will discuss The Boston Public Garden: The Atypical Landscape. How many of us know the true story behind this Boston icon? From its origins as a private botanical garden built on filled marshland to the public horticultural and educational gem of the mid-Victorian era, see how the Public Garden has become a site for celebration and forgotten controversy.

    On July 22, Jeffrey Curtis, Director of Gardens and Grounds at Newport Mansions will present Gardens of the Newport Mansions. Hear the inside story of the miraculous gardens of Newport, Rhode Island’s mansions. The Preservation Society of Newport County has worked tirelessly since the 1940s to preserve Newport’s sumptuous mansions and grounds. Take a visual walk through gardens including Miss Wetmore’s Secret Garden at Chateau-sur-Mer, Rosecliff, and the Sunken Gardens at The Elms.

    Lastly, on July 29, the Museum welcomes Jane Amidon, Associate Dean for Graduate Programs and Research, and Professor and Director of the Urban Landscape Program at Northeastern University, who will speak on Jefferson’s Monticello: A Garden of Science and Art. Our third US president was also the founding father of quintessential American landscape practices. Examine the enduring legacy and fruitful lessons of his civic horticulture through the gardens of his estate in Virginia at Monticello, home to two centuries of innovation in botanical, agrarian, and aesthetic techniques.

  • Friday, June 27 – Sunday, June 29 – The 2014 Newport Flower Show – Journey: Grand Vistas

    The same titans who built the summer cottages of Newport joined forces to create luxurious travel while also building the infrastructure which would forever change industry in America and become a model for the world. Climb aboard as The Preservation Society of Newport County journeys to grand vistas when the trip was as splendid as the destination! You’ll definitely want to be a part of the Opening Night Cocktail Party on Friday from 6 – 9, a much-anticipated festive event that kicks off the Newport summer season! Enjoy the exciting cocktail buffet while admiring the fresh floral arrangements and horticultural extravaganzas, and shopping the Oceanside Boutiques and Gardeners Marketplace.

    The weekend includes several floral arranging sessions. Julie Lapham will take us on An Elegant Floral Journey, showing off distinctive arrangements inspired by travel. Robyn Spagnolo and Lynne Merrill will show us how to create Gems From the Garden, demonstrating the fine art of making jewelry out of enhanced dried plant material and other types of Botanical Art.

    In America’s Romance with the English Garden, author and landscape designer Thomas Mickey (and Garden Club of the Bay Bay presenter) will teach guests about the inception of the modern American garden industry in the 1890s and the English Garden’s rise in popularity nationwide. Kerry Ann Mendez, a garden consultant, teacher and lecturer, will present Simplifying Gardens to Fit Changing Lifestyles. She’ll provide easy-to-follow downsizing strategies, recommended no-fuss plant material, and design tips for stunning, easy to maintain year-round gardens.

    Guests who are interested in taking on a new hobby can learn the basics of beekeeping and how to get started with horticultural writer and beekeeper Sanne Kure-Jensen’s Welcome Pollinators to Your Garden. Entrepreneur and lady farmer Kathleen Gagan, owner of New Jersey’s Peony’s Envy, will present Designing Gardens with a Passion for Peonies.

    Joan Harrison, master gardener and President of the Cape Cod Hydrangea Society, will present Success With Hydrangeas, providing tips on how to select hydrangeas, where to plant them, how to provide basic care, and more.

    In Jaw-Dropping, Traffic-Stopping, “Get the Neighbors Talking” Containers, award-winning container garden designer Deborah Trickett will give a hands-on demonstration as she shows you how to take your container gardens from “blah” to “aaah.”. In Myths, Lies and All the Latest Dirt, author and radio host C.L. Fornari will help gardeners sort through the folklore and hype surrounding plants, practices and products.

    The Show’s Presenting Sponsor, Bartlett Tree Experts, will share its expertise, as arborist Chris Fletcher leads a tour of the beautiful trees at The Elms and Chepstow on Saturday afternoon; and on Sunday, award-winning landscape designer Warren Leach will give an onsite lecture about the plants and design elements used in the Bartlett garden exhibit on the front lawn of Rosecliff.

    Aside from the free lectures taking place all weekend, nationally renowned garden designer P. Allen Smith will appear at special Lecture Luncheons on both Friday and Saturday. On Friday, Smith will share insight and anecdotes about the benefits and pleasures of observing others’ gardens in Looking Over the Garden Fence. In his Saturday lecture, Irreverent Moves That Will Improve Your Garden and Life, Smith will share ways to think outside the box for your garden this year. These two Lecture Luncheons are separately ticketed events requiring advance reservations, and both will be followed by book signings.

    During the 19th century, hotels and resorts elevated fine dining for their guests to an art form, a combination of entertainment and spectacle. This Wednesday, November 6 lecture, Feasting at Leisure: 19th Century Hotel and Resort Dining by Mary Ann Caton, Director of the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum, at Rosecliff, 548 Bellevue Avenue in Newport, examines the causes for such feasting and highlights special foods, chefs, menus and recipes used at resorts from New York to Newport and beyond.
