  • Thursday, February 21, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm – Mass Hort’s School Garden Conference

    The Massachusetts Horticultural Society’s fifth annual school garden conferenceon February 21 from 9 – 4 at The Gardens at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley, will feature workshops that explore regional best practices for planning and running a garden that will not only meet educational goals, but also foster life skills. Attending educators will develop practical gardening skills that will increase their confidence and ability to teach in and from a garden. Workshops will support interested parents and volunteers, teachers and administrators—those who have established gardens and those just breaking ground. $40 for Mass Hort members, $60 for nonmembers.   • Sunday, August 20, 10:30 am – 12:00 noon – Back to School Gardens

    Join Hannah Traggis, Mass Hort’s Seed to Table Educator, on Sunday, August 20 at 10:30 am at The Gardens at Elm Bank in Wellesley and get a jump start on your school garden! Topics for this hands-on workshop include: direct sowing and transplanting seedlings, selecting crops to plant in the fall, mulching, weeding, maintaining and using those crops, and season extension. You will get to practice all of these in the garden and learn to construct a simple and inexpensive season extending bed cover that will allow you and your students to enjoy your garden well into the late fall. A few curriculum ideas will also be discussed. Take home several seedlings including lettuce, kale, spinach and more, that are ready to plant on the first day of school.

    Hannah Traggis manages Mass Hort’s edible gardens throughout The Gardens at Elm Bank. She oversees the Seed to Table vegetable garden which produces more than 4,000 pounds of produce each year to support our educational mission and local food pantries.   • Thursday, February 23, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm – Mass Hort’s School Garden Conference: Beyond Education

    The Massachusetts Horticultural Society’s third annual school garden conference at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley, on Thursday, February 23 will feature workshops that explore regional best practices for planning and running a garden that will not only meet educational goals, but also provide opportunities for a diverse student body, and make connections within the school community and beyond. A variety of workshops will support interested parents and volunteers, teachers, and administrators – those who have established gardens and those just breaking ground.  The event will run from 9 – 4 (blizzard day February 24), and the cost includes morning coffee and lunch.  $45 for Mass Hort members, $60 for nonmembers.  Register at www.masshort.org.

  • Wednesday, January 25, 9:30 am – School Gardens

    The Wellesley Garden Study Group in collaboration with Massachusetts Horticultural Society and Wellesley Green Schools will host a program on School Gardens at the Parkman Educational Center, Mass Hort at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street, Wellesley on January 25th . Those interested to attend may join us 9:30A.M. for refreshments and announcements, and the program will begin at 10:30A.M. Free and open to the public.

    The program School Gardens will be an illustrated history of of the school garden movement of the 19th century America and its further development. John Forti will discuss the heirloom and native plants of our region and how they can be integrated into the school curriculum from seed to table. The discussion will also be on how a school yard can enrich both habitat and community.

    John Forti is the Director of Horticulture for the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. He also serves as the Governor of Slow Food Massachusetts. He was formerly the Director of Horticulture at Strawbery Banke Museum and Plimoth Plantation Museum. Over 20,000 follow his blog as “The Heirloom Gardener – John Forti” on Facebook.
