  • Sunday, April 13, 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm – Seeds, Shoots and Leaves: A Sustainable Gardening Workshop and Seed Exchange

    This Slow Food Boston event on Sunday, April 13 from 5 – 7 at Allandale Farm, 259 Allandale Road in Brookline, is a workshop on seeds and what it takes to start and keep them growing! Guest speakers include Enid Hart Boasberg of the Concord Seed Lending Library and John Lee of Allandale Farm will teach about seed propagation and seed saving. Attendees will get a first hand look at sustainable gardening practices for hardy plants and will learn methods for preserving seeds for next year’s crop (and the year after that and the year after that…). Additionally, we ask attendees to bring seeds of a favorite vegetable, fruit, or herb to trade with their fellow gardeners. (Heirloom varieties are encouraged!) We will have materials on hand for seed sharing and hot beverages and snacks to keep us warm and spread on what will hopefully be a lovely spring evening.   • Saturday, September 28, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm – Fall & Winter Bloom in the Solar Greenhouse, Unheated Glassed-In Porch, or Spare Bedroom

    Do you want the sights and smells of flowers in winter, but rising fuel costs seem to put a greenhouse out of reach? The solution—the subject of this Berkshire Botanical Garden class—is to go solar! You will learn the basic elements of a solar greenhouse, how to optimize greenhouse performance, how to operate month by month in response to the weather and how to choose plants that are growable and rewarding. The class will take place Saturday, September 28, from 1 – 3 in the Education Center of BBG in Stockbridge. BBG members $22, nonmembers $27.     James Jones is a lifelong gardener and a member of many horticultural societies, with a particular interest in the North American Rock Garden Society, where he has been national president and chapter chair, as well as director of the Seed Exchange.     The American Rhododendron Society Massachusetts Branch will hold its Annual Founder’s Day Brunch and Seed Exchange on Sunday, November 15, from 10 – 2, at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive, Boylston, Massachusetts.   The American Rhododendron Society Massachusetts Chapter is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to encourage interest in and to disseminate information about the genus Rhododendron focusing on Rhododendrons compatible with the climate in New England. Members’ experience ranges from novice to expert. Society activities include chapter meetings, flower and foliage shows, plant sales, garden tours, seed and cutting exchanges, and communication through printed and online publications.For information and registration, log on to www.rosebay.org.
