  • Thursday, April 14, 2:00 pm – Garden Club of the Back Bay April Meeting – Trees from Seed: Conservation, Biology, and Ecology

    Sean Halloran, Plant Propagator at The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, will speak to us about Tree Propagation. Sean will start off with a brief overview of the plant conservation efforts at the Arnold Arboretum, and how plant conservation fits into every part of the Arnold’s mission.  He will then cover the basics of seed biology, and how seed biology and plant sexuality guide decisions about conservation and propagation. Sean will conclude by covering the many roles an urban tree may play, while highlighting a few underutilized native trees and shrubs. Questions are welcome throughout, with more opportunity for discussion at the conclusion of the talk.

    Sean Halloran received a Bachelor’s in Horticulture and a Master’s degree in Plant & Environmental Science from Clemson University where he focused on nutrient media in tissue culture propagation. His professional background includes private residential horticulture, greenhouse and nursery production, plant nutrient management in soil-less media, and temperate woody plant propagation and conservation. As the Arnold Arboretum’s Plant Propagator, Sean continues a 150-year tradition of growing woody temperate species from seed, cuttings, grafts, layers, and more; as well as being given the honor to travel and wild collect plants for the Arnold Arboretum.

  • Thursday, July 25, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – What to Propagate and How to Do It

    While many plants are difficult to propagate, others are extremely easy. Sow 100 seeds of spotted wintergreen and a single seedling may emerge; sow 100 seeds of spotted bee balm (below) and somehow up pop 150 seedlings! On July 25 at 10 am at Garden in the Woods in Framingham, join Dan Jaffe to learn not only how to propagate, but what to propagate to maximize your plantings.   • Saturday, December 8, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Propagating Native Plants from Seed, Part I: Dormancy and Sowing Techniques

    On Saturday, December 8, from 1 – 4 at Nasami Farm in Whately, learn to propagate native plants from seed in the first session of this two-part, hands-on workshop that focuses on practical methods for small-scale propagation. This workshop is appropriate for beginners and propagators with some experience. Take one or both classes. Part 1 explores seed biology, overcoming dormancy, and sowing techniques. $40 for New England Wild Flower Society and Northeast Organic Farmers Association members, $48 for nonmembers.   • Saturdays, October 3 & 24, 9 am – 4 pm – Propagating Trees and Shrubs from Cuttings and Seeds

    Need to nurture?  Then join longtime Arnold Arboretum propagator Jack Alexander to learn basic information and techniques for propagating most woody plants.  Session One includes a lecture and workshop on seed propagation and construction of a propagation case.  Session Two will be a lecture and workshop on hardwood cuttings.  You will leave class with numerous cuttings and seeds to cherish and grow.  To participate, you must sign an assumption-of-risk-and-release form in order to practice the techniques taught in class.  Bring a lunch and a beverage.  If you own hand pruners, bring them to the second class.  A sharp knife and an apron may also be helpful.  You will be collecting propagules from the Arboretum grounds on both afternoons regardless of weather, so dress accordingly and wear comfortable shoes.  The classes will take place at the Dana Greenhouses, Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain.  For directions, and to register, log on to www.arboretum.harvard.edu, or www.wellesley.edu/WCFH.  You may also email horticulture@wellesley.edu.  Course Number HOR 10 010, WCFH and Arboretum member price $180, Non-Members $215.
