  • Thursday, March 14, 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm – Seeds of Change: Reclaim the Legacy of Seed Saving

    On Thursday, March 14, Thoreau Farm, The Concord Seed Lending Library (Fowler Branch), Gardening for Life, and ConcordCAN will present Seeds Of Change: Reclaim the Legacy of Seed Saving, at Thoreau Farm, 341 Virginia Road in Concord, beginning at 7:30 pm.  Speaker Bryan Connolly, noted field botanist, homestead farmer, FEDCO seed saver, and author of The Wisdom of Plant Heritage, will address the history and utility of seed saving within the context of climate change, plus give practical advice for most common garden products.  If Concord Schools are closed due to bad weather, the program will be canceled.  Free, but donations are always welcomed.  For more information, visit www.concordfood.ning.com.

  • Friday, October 19, 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm – Seed Saving with Bryan Connolly, Massachusetts State Botanist

    Bryan Connolly is the Massachusetts State Botanist for the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program, Division of Fisheries and Wildlife. He will speak at Elm Bank on Friday, October 19, beginning at 6:30 pm, on Seed Saving.

    Bryan is also researching the taxonomy and uses of the native plant genus Aronia or Chokeberry for doctoral dissertation. He is the author of “The wisdom of plant heritage” the Northeast Organic Farming Association’s handbook on small-scale seed production, and a co-author of “Breeding Organic Vegetables Step By Step Guide” NOFA-NY, and “The Vascular Plants of Massachusetts: A County Checklist, First Revision”. His professional experience includes being a botanical consultant for the Connecticut Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, surveying rare plant populations for the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, coordinating a volunteer invasive plant survey at the New England Wild Flower Society, growing for FEDCO seeds, and instructing botany classes at Connecticut College and the University of Connecticut.

    Cost – $10.00 for Mass Hort members, $12.00 for non-members.

    Learn the basics of harvesting, processing, cleaning, and storing a wide spectrum of native plant seeds in this hands-on workshop, to be held at Nasami Farm in Whately, Massachusetts on Saturday, August 27, from 9 – 1, sponsored by The New England Wild Flower Society. Instructor Kate Pawling starts with a discussion about the timing of collection, plant identification, determining ripeness, harvesting methods, processing techniques, and proper storage to maintain seed viability. Then venture out into the Nasami Farm Sanctuary for some botanizing and seed collection. Return indoors where we try our hands at cleaning and processing various types of seeds. Bring home the seeds that you clean, and learn first hand the tremendous benefits that seed-saving brings to the willing gardener. Fee: $54 (Member) / $65 (Nonmember).
