    Growing plants from seed is a rewarding and cost-effective way to cultivate a diverse and healthy garden. Whether you’re starting vegetables, herbs, or ornamental flowers, understanding the basics and techniques will make all the difference in your success. 
    In this Massachusetts Horticultural Society virtual lecture on March 5, we will cover everything you need to know to get started, including choosing the right seeds, creating an ideal growing environment, and selecting the correct materials and supplies. We will discuss ways to develop a timeline for germination and transplanting, ensuring your seedlings are strong and ready for the season. Whether you’re brand new to seed starting or looking to refine your process, this lecture will provide practical tips, DIY solutions, and the knowledge to help you grow with confidence.

    This lecture will be recorded and sent to registrants following the class date. Instructor Gretel Anspach is a retired systems engineer for Raytheon. She is a trustee of Massachusetts Horticultural Society and a lifetime master gardener with MMGA. Gretel enjoys the elements of science & math involved in horticulture. For nine years she oversaw the Food Pantry Garden at Raytheon. In 2016 she won the MMGA Lifetime Achievement award. Gretel has gone on to establish and maintain a 20,000 square foot food production garden that has provided fresh produce to the Marlboro and Maynard Food Pantries for the last fourteen years.   • Sunday, April 11, 11:00 am – 12:30 pm – Seed Starting for the New Cutting Garden

    Seed starting can be intimidating stuff, with calendar complications and lots of equipment. Streamline your process in this Berkshire Botanical Garden in person course on April 11 at 11 am from Colie Collen of Flower Scout, who will review the optimal start dates and conditions for a wide range of cut flowers, herbs and veggies, and guide you through the best ways to start your own seeds at home.  Colie Collen, founder, farmer and designer at Flower Scout, brings her love of all things wild and seasonal to her work. After many years of farming on the west and east coasts, her interest turned to flower production in 2012, and subsequently, to design. Colie seeks to create individual experiences for clients based on the colors, textures and shapes the land/garden/season is creating at a particular moment, with customers’ aesthetic preferences continually in mind. $12 for BBG members, $18 for nonmembers.

    Get your gardens off to a good start this spring by starting vegetable, flower and herb seeds indoors. This Tower Hill Botanic Garden live webinar on March 11 from 6:30 – 7:30 will help you decide which plants will benefit most from a head start. You will learn the tools and supplies needed, the best sowing and nurturing techniques, and when and how to transition your seedlings into the garden.

    Christie Higginbottom has worked as a costumed interpreter at Old Sturbridge Village since 1981. From 1984 to 2004 she coordinated the historic horticulture program researching, planning and planting the re-created kitchen and flower gardens at the museum’s historic households. She also supervised the Village’s Herb Garden collection, a garden exhibiting over 300 varieties of historic herbs. From 2004 to 2006 she researched and developed a series of self-guided walking trails interpreting people and the environment in the early 1800s. She researched and designed the 2007-2009 exhibit “Taking Root: Gardening in Pots in the early 1800s.” Now retired from full-time work at OSV, she continues to work in costume part-time and to present garden programs for the Village.

    Join The Trustees on March 16 at 10 am at The FARM Institute , 13 Aero Avenue in Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard for this annual workshop on getting your own seeds started. We’ll discuss:

    -plant hardiness zones and gardening on the Island
    -plant families and their differing needs
    -creating a garden design and planting calendar
    -what to start indoors now
    -light, heat and moisture needs
    -transplanting and hardening off
    -thinking ahead: companion planting and seed saving

    This Massachusetts Horticultural Society’s hands-on workshop on March 2 from 10 – 12, led by Senior Horticulturist Hannah Traggis, will have you start your own seeds to take home for your garden. Through a series of demonstrations, you will learn the proper care and handling of young seedlings. Seeds and materials will be provided, but feel free to bring your own selection of seeds to plant!

    Hannah Traggis is Mass Hort’s Senior Horticulturist. She assists with maintainence and propagation of our twelve gardens, manages Mass Hort at the Flower Show, and lectures and demonstrates best garden practices to Mass Hort visitors, garden clubs, and teachers. Additionally, she manages the edible gardens throughout The Gardens at Elm Bank.

    This April 22nd hands-on workshop at Elm Bank, led by Mass Hort Seed to Table Educator Hannah Traggis, will have you start your own seeds to take home for your garden. Through a series of demonstrations, you will learn the proper care and handling of a variety of young seedlings. You will also practice transplanting to promote the sturdiest and healthiest seedlings! Seeds and materials will be provided. Feel free to bring your own selection of seeds to plant. The class will be held from 10 – 12.

    Hannah Traggis manages Mass Hort’s edible gardens throughout The Gardens at Elm Bank. She oversees the Seed to Table vegetable garden which produces more than 4,000 pounds of produce each year to support our educational mission and local food pantries.     Growing a plant from seed to seedling to maturity is a bit magical, very satisfying, and always educational. With a talk and hands-on activities, Sean Halloran will explain seed biology, conditions needed to trigger germination, and techniques for starting various types of plants, annuals (including vegetables), trees, and shrubs from seeds.

    This Arnold Arboretum workshop is for beginners and those who have been frustrated in past attempts to transform seed to seedling. Students will leave class with a selection of seeds raring to grow. Aftercare will be necessary. The workshop will take place Saturday, April 1 from 10 – noon in the Dana Greenhouse, 1050 Centre Street in Jamaica Plain, and is $35 for Arboretum members, $45 for nonmembers.     Get a head start on Mother Nature by starting seeds indoors. Great for novice gardeners, learn the basics in this hands-on Weston Nurseries workshop on Saturday, March 25 at 11 am. We will begin with timing of seed starting such as what to start and when. We will also talk about containers, seed starting soil, and how to take care of your seedlings once they have germinated. The free workshop will be held at the Chelmsford location, 160 Pine Hill Road in Chelmsford.
