  • Sunday, May 6, 10:30 am – 12:00 noon – Early Season Gardening Workshop

    Get an early start on implementing a successful growing season at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street, on Sunday, May 6 at 10:30 am. Hannah Traggis will lead this hands-on workshop, covering essential vegetable gardening skills such as handling and transplanting young seedlings and proper weed management. Consideration will be given to spring garden and soil preparations, early spring and summer cover cropping and mulching options, and planning ahead for succession planting and extended vegetable harvest.

    Saturday, August 26, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Hops, Ales and Brewing, Oh My!

    The Gardens at Elm Bank, and Barleycorn’s in Natick, present a full day on hops and their use in brewing on Saturday, August 26 from 10 – 4. Dr. Heather Darby, Agronomist and Soils Specialist with the University of Vermont will cover the basics for growing hops in the Northeast, including information on site selection, variety selection, fertility management, irrigation systems, and pest management. Protocols to determine harvest times, harvest equipment, drying requirements, and storage will also be covered. Come and learn from UVM’s vast experience in growing hops in our region.

    After, we will harvest hops from our Seed to Table Garden at Elm Bank and rejoin at Barleycorns in Natick, where we will use those hops to brew our own 3 Goddess Pale Ale. $60 Mass Hort members; $85 general admission. *Add $50 to bring home a case of the brew. Sign up at www.masshort.org.

    Join Hannah Traggis, Mass Hort’s Seed to Table Educator, on Sunday, August 20 at 10:30 am at The Gardens at Elm Bank in Wellesley and get a jump start on your school garden! Topics for this hands-on workshop include: direct sowing and transplanting seedlings, selecting crops to plant in the fall, mulching, weeding, maintaining and using those crops, and season extension. You will get to practice all of these in the garden and learn to construct a simple and inexpensive season extending bed cover that will allow you and your students to enjoy your garden well into the late fall. A few curriculum ideas will also be discussed. Take home several seedlings including lettuce, kale, spinach and more, that are ready to plant on the first day of school.

    Join Massachusetts Horticultural Society on Sunday, July 30 at 10:30 am for a stroll through the vegetable gardens at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley, with Sue Scheufele from the UMass Extension Vegetable Program. We will learn to identify common insect and disease pests, and the damage they can cause to vegetable and herb plants. We will discuss organic management strategies that are available to home gardeners including use of mulches, row covers, bio-based pesticides and more.

    Old strawberry bed not so productive as you’d like? Always wanted a strawberry bed but don’t know where to begin?

    Visit Hannah Traggis at The Gardens at Elm Bank’s Seed to Table Garden, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley on Sunday, July 9 beginning at 10:30 am to learn how create new or rejuvenate old strawberry beds, and a simple technique to propagate new plants from old ones. Basic strawberry plant health and care will be discussed and you will get to practice your new technique and take a few plants home for your own garden.

    This April 22nd hands-on workshop at Elm Bank, led by Mass Hort Seed to Table Educator Hannah Traggis, will have you start your own seeds to take home for your garden. Through a series of demonstrations, you will learn the proper care and handling of a variety of young seedlings. You will also practice transplanting to promote the sturdiest and healthiest seedlings! Seeds and materials will be provided. Feel free to bring your own selection of seeds to plant. The class will be held from 10 – 12.

    Join Seed to Table educator Hannah Traggis every Sunday at 10 a.m.at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley, now through Columbus Day, to explore our food system and discover the joys of backyard gardening. Learn skills like seed saving, harvesting, and preparing and preserving fresh foods. Each week will be different and connected to the season and natural growing. Craft your own take-away each week. This is a drop-in program, no pre-registration required.

    Mass Hort Members: Free, Non-Members: $5 Please note: there will be no Seed to Table programming on September 4.

  • Sunday, September 20, 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Fall Harvest Festival Dinner

    Come and celebrate all that is local and abundant! Join us for an evening celebrating the fall harvest and building community in the Gardens at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley. Showcasing the best of local agriculture and seasonal heirloom foods, come share a place at our tables enjoying fine open-air dining, hand-crafted beverages, and music and dancing under the goddesses in the Maple Grove. Twilight tours of the gardens will lead to us to gather together for a festive seated dinner culminating in a magical illuminated candle labyrinth.

    This event supports the Garden to Table program strives to build strong local food systems from the seeds planted to the food grown and harvested and shared within the community. We work to offer high caliber education in horticulture, nutrition, and food production and preparation both in schools and in the Seed to Table and Garden to Table education spaces in the Gardens at Elm Bank. The Massachusetts Horticultural Society also works to raise awareness of food accessibility issues within local, greater Boston, and regional communities.
