  • Tuesday, April 12 – Thursday, April 14 – The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts Flower Show School Course II: Growing, Staging, Exhibiting and Judging

    The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts will conduct a Flower Show School Course II: Growing, Staging, Exhibiting, and Judging, on April 12 – 14, featuring one of our own members, Kaye Vosburgh, along with Cathy Felton, as instructors. The event will take place at the DoubleTree by Hilton at 11 Beaver Street in Milford, Massachusetts.

    Kaye Vosburgh has a B.S. in Biology and a Masters in the Art of Teaching. She is an NGC Master Judge and a Design and Procedure Instructor. Kaye has chaired several award winning Standard Flower Shows and won numerous awards in the New England Spring Flower Show. She is a member of 3 garden clubs, including the one she started with her Master Gardener co-workers. Kaye is a Sogetsu Ikebana Instructor of the highest rank, Riji. She has demonstrated throughout the Central Atlantic Region, at CFAA in Florida and in Ecuador. Kaye’s favorite activity is sharing creative moments with other designers and students.

    ​Cathy Felton has a B.S. in Zoology and has studied at the former Landscape Institute of Harvard University, but a love of horticulture led her into the garden club world which now includes lecturing and teaching. She is a Garden Club of America Horticulture Judge; American Daffodil Society Judge; and Chairman of the American Daffodil Society Judging School; and a Master American Hosta Society Judge. Cathy has served on the National Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC), national board as Horticulture Chairman and Vice Chairman of Gardening Study Schools. She is also an NGC Master Flower Show Judge and Horticulture Instructor for flower show schools, and a member of both the Hamilton-Wenham Garden Club and the the North Shore Garden Club in MA.

  • Thursdays, September 26, October 24, and December 12 – Sogetsu Ikebana

    Sogetsu Ikebana is an internationally recognized school of Japanese flower arranging that places emphasis on linear perfection, color harmony, space, and form.  Some materials included.  For new students only (first Sogetsu Ikebana class) – the instructor will be in contact with the student prior to the start of the class with instructions and a list of materials to bring to class.  Flowers will be provided; however, some additional materials will be required and may be purchased from the instructor.  The instructor requests cash or check only.  Three classes will be offered – Thursday, September 26, 9:30 – 12, Thursday, October 24, 9:30 – 12, and Thursday, December 12, 11 – 1:30.     Dora Lee, past president of the Boston Chapter of Ikebana International, demonstrates Sogetsu Ikebana, from basic to freestyle, at the Barbara and Theodore Alfond Auditorium at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston on Sunday, April 26 from 3 – 4.     Join The Massachusetts Horticultural Society on Thursday, January 22, from 7 – 8:30 for a brief presentation on the history of ikebana and a demonstration from basic to free style Sogetsu Ikebana. Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arrangement that is growing in popularity throughout the United States. Steeped in the philosophy of developing a closeness with nature, ikebana weaves living materials and creative expression together with specific rules of construction.

    Mrs. Tomoko Tanaka began her studies of the Sogetsu school of ikebana at the age of thirteen. Presently she holds a certificate of Riji, the highest rank of the Sogetsu School. She serves as director of Sogetsu Mass Branch and served twice as president of Ikebana International Boston Chapter. She is currently teaching ikebana at home.     Her many experiences include teaching, demonstrations and workshops throughout New England, including the Boston Flower and Garden Show. She has also appeared as a guest on the PBS television show, “The Victory Garden” where she introduced ikebana to a national audience.   • Friday, April 25 – Monday, April 28 – Art in Bloom

    As part of the MFA’s 2014 Season of Color, join them for this exuberant spring festival of art and floral design! Once again, garden clubs and professional designers from across New England will create floral arrangements inspired by the MFA’s works of art. Art in Bloom is open during regular Museum hours (10 am–4:45 pm) and is free with Museum admission; no reservations are required to see the floral arrangements and participate in most of the programs listed below. Events with prices require tickets.

    This year’s featured speaker is Emily Thompson.  Born in Vermont, she came from the north woods with her artist’s eye, a love of nature, and an unfettered imagination to become one of the nation’s most sought-after creators of organically beautiful, yet classically composed, floral designs.  Thompson, a sculptor, is one of New York’s premier floral artists, and received significant acclaim for her exquisite 2011 holiday decoration of the White House.
