  • Sunday, June 9, 11:00 am – 4:00 pm – Backyard Havens of the Somerville Garden Club: A Self Guided Tour

    On Sunday, June 9, from 11 – 4, rain or shine, enjoy the Backyard Havens of the Somerville Garden Club.  Tickets are $15, and you may purchase tickets in advance at the Pemberton Garden Center, 2225 Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge, Porter Square Books, and True Grounds Cafe and Coffeehouse, 717 Broadway, Ball Square in Somerville.  On Sunday June 2, tickets will also be on sale at The Davis Flea Market, Corner of Holland Street and Buena Vista Road in Davis Square.  On the day of the event, there will be a table at Davis Square Statue Park, opposite the MBTA.  Procees from the tour support the educational programs and public plantings of the Somerville Garden Club.  For more information visit www.somervillegardenclub.org.

  • Wednesday, March 13, 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm – Easy Composting: How to Turn Garbage Into Gold

    Ann McGovern, Consumer Waste Reduction Coordinator from the Mass. Dept. of Environmental Protection will explain how to improve your soil while disposing of nearly half of your household waste at the same time. This lecture is the centerpiece of the Somerville Garden Club March meeting, to be held Wednesday, March 13, from 7 – 9 at the Tufts Administration Building, 167 Holland Street in Somerville.

    All SGC meetings are free and the public is invited to attend. Meetings include club announcements, a horticultural question and answer segment, and a raffle of donated plants and garden-related items.  Onsite parking is available and the building is a short walk from the Davis Square Redline T station.   • Saturday, September 15, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm – Perennial and House Plant Sale

    The Somerville Garden Club will hold a perennial and house plant sale on Saturday, September 15, from 9 – 1 at Statue Park in Davis Square, at the intersection of College Avenue and Holland Streets in Somerville, across from the Red Line Davis Square MBTA stop. Perennials for sun and shade, herbs, ground covers, shrubs, and houseplants–every gardener will find a treasure among the hundreds of plants for sale. Somerville Garden Club members and friends of the club donate both reliable, and sometimes rare, favorites from their own gardens for others to get to know and enjoy.  Proceeds support the programs and citywide public plantings of the Somerville Garden Club.     The Somerville Garden Club will hold a Perennial and House Plant Sale on Saturday, September 17, from 9 – 1 at Statue Park in Davis Square, Somerville.  Enjoy a wide variety of house plants, sun and shade loving perennials, shrubs, herbs and groundcovers, ranging from old-fashioned favorites to connoisseur plants – all reasonably priced.  Proceeds help support the free lectures and public plantings sponsored by the non-profit Somerville Garden Club, so let’s all get out and support our sister club.  For more information visit www.somervillegardenclub.org.

  • Tuesday, February 1, 5:00 pm – 11:30 pm – Bowl for CitySprouts

    Bowl for CitySprouts on Tuesday, February 1 at Flatbread Company & Saccos Bowl Haven in Davis Square, Somerville.  This event is fun for children of all ages, and every pizza purchased supports CitySprouts school gardens. The CitySprouts mission is to develop, implement and maintain beautiful, resource-rich school gardens in collaboration with public school communities. Integrated into the curriculum, CitySprouts gardens inspire teachers, students, and families with a deep, hands-on connection to the food cycle, sustainable agriculture, and the natural environment.

  • Saturday, September 18, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm – Perennial and House Plant Sale

    This annual sale sponsored by the Somerville Garden Club is a must for gardeners hunting for locally grown plants. An interesting variety of perennials, houseplants, small shrubs and trees will be available, all at very reasonable prices. Horticultural information and a table for children make the day even more enjoyable. The event helps support Somerville’s non profit garden club’s many outreach, education and planting programs.The event takes place Saturday, September 18, from 9 – 1, rain or shine, at Statue Park in Davis Square, on the intersection of Holland St. and College Avenue, across from the Somerville Theatre in Somerville.  Free admission.   • Sunday, July 25, 11:00 am – 5:00 pm – The Incredible Edible Gardens of Somerville

    Somerville celebrates the talents and traditions of its urban farmers, with this 31-site tour of public and private edible gardens on Sunday, July 25, from 11 – 5. Gardening techniques will be demonstrated on composting, rain catching, bee keeping,and other topics throughout the day. The self-guided tour is sponsored by the Somerville Garden Club.  You may also email swilkins@mit.edu for more information.

    The Somerville Garden Club was founded in 1994 by a group of Somerville residents to promote home gardening as well as the horticultural possibilities of Somerville’s public spaces. Of the club’s over 200 members, some are experienced gardeners, some are beginners; some are residents of Somerville, and about a third come from surrounding communities. All gardening enthusiasts are welcome to participate in their activities.
