    Climate Ready Boston is Mayor Marty Walsh’s ongoing initiative to help the City grow and prosper in the face of climate change. Protecting South Boston from sea level rise and coastal flooding is a priority. On March 6th, join Greenovate Boston for a community open house, where we will update you on our work and discuss options for ensuring a Climate Ready South Boston.   • Monday, May 12, 6:30 pm – 7:45 pm – South Boston: Streetcar Suburb?

    Please join the Boston Public Library for the 34th Annual Marjorie M. Gibbons Lecture on Monday, May 12, beginning at 6:30 pm, entitled South Boston: Streetcar Suburb? with speaker Patrick E. Francis. Mr. Francis will present an illustrated talk on the use of public transportation by South Bostonians from the days of the horse-drawn trolley to today’s hybrid bus. This free special event is open to all adults. Refreshments will accompany the program. The program will take place at the South Boston Branch of the BPL, 646 East Broadway.

    Share Our Strength’s Operation Frontline of Boston is sponsoring a service day on Saturday, May 15 from 11 – 3.  South Boston Grows aims to improve community green space and to increase knowledge of growing edible plants with the long term goal of increasing access and exposure to and intake of fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs among under-served populations in South Boston.  If you can help, please rsvp to Tony at tdellovo@ofl.org, or call 617-774-1326 to sign up or to ask any additional questions.  Children are welcome!  All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.  Rain or shine, please bring your own work gloves, and Save Our Strength will provide lunch.  The service site is at 70 Devine Way in South Boston.  Street parking is available and the Andrew T stop is a 5 minute walk.

  • Tuesday, March 2, and Wednesday, March 10 4:30 pm – 8:30 pm – City of Boston Community Workshop on Climate Action

    The City of Boston will hold two Community Workshops on Climate Action, the first on Tuesday, March 2, from 4:30 – 8:30 pm, at Old South Church, 645 Boylston Street, in the Mary Norton Hall on the Second Floor, and the second on Wednesday, March 10, from 4:40 – 8:30 pm, at the Metcalf Ballroom, George Sherman Union, Boston University, 775 Commonwealth Avenue.  Target neighborhoods under discussion in the March 2 session will be East Boston, Charlestown, South Boston, and in the Downtown area, Chinatown, North Leather District, and the West End. Neighborhoods under discussion on March 10 include Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Kenmore, South End, Allston, Brighton, and the Fenway. Interpretation available on request in American Sign Language, Chinese, Portuguese and Spanish.  You must register in order to ensure a space at this workshop.  You may register online at www.cityofboston.gov/calendar/#/?i=2.

  • Saturday, December 5 – Sunday, December 6 – South Boston Christmas House Tour

    Catholic Charities Laboure Center will hold a South Boston Christmas House Tour of five homes decorated for the holidays beginning Saturday, December 5, from 4 – 6 pm, and continuing Sunday, December 6, from noon – 4 pm.  The Saturday Twilight Tour will conclude with a reception immediately after at The Terrace Room of UMASS Boston Campus Center.  The cost for this benefit evening is $75.  The Daytime Tour on Sunday will be self guided, or you may take an available trolley, and will cost $25 per ticket if purchased in advance, or $30 for a ticket purchased on the day of the tour.  Parking is available at Castle Island, and you may start the tour at Castle Island or at the Laboure Center, 275 West Broadway.  You may also visit The Shoppe at Laboure for a bit of Christmas shopping.  For more information, contact Judy Swanson at jswanson@ccab.org, or by telephone at 617-464-8503.  Tickets may be ordered on line at www.ccab.org.

    The South End Historical Society (SEHS) presents its 41st Annual South End House Tour on Saturday, October 17, from 10 – 5.  This self-guided tour of private homes and public spaces begins at the Boston Center for the Arts, 539 Tremont Street, where you pick up your tickets and guidebook.  Tickets are $25 each, and may be purchased on line at www.southendhistoricalsociety.org.  For more information, call 617-536-4445, or email admin@southendhistoricalsociety.org.

    The South End Historical Society  is a group of interested citizens that recognizes the unique architectural and cultural history of the South End of Boston. Through the efforts of the society, the South End has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the largest Victorian brick rowhouse district in the United States.

    During its first thirty years, the SEHS has worked continuously to retain the Victorian integrity of the South End and reintroduce the greater Boston area to the South End with its annual House Tour as well as numerous historical programs and events. The SEHS also encourages research, conservation, and education to protect and promote interest in our local historic buildings, monuments, and sites.

    The South End Historical Society is one of the primary contributors to the preservation of the South End and a supporter of its ongoing revitalization.

  • Tuesday, October 13, 6:00 pm – A Tasteful Pursuit

    While not strictly garden related, we would like to inform our web site readership of an event taking place Tuesday, October 13, beginning at 6 pm at Hamersley’s Bistro, 553 Tremont Street in the South End.  A Tasteful Pursuit – Boston is part of Chefs On Tour For Childhood Hunger.  In the world’s wealthiest nation, no kid should grow up hungry.  Join host Chef Gordon Hamersley for a unique dinner event featuring the Boston area’s most talented chefs.  The dinner will raise funds to support Share Our Strength’s efforts to end childhood hunger in the United States.  9.6 million eligible kids don’t get free or reduced price school breakfast.  Joining Chef Hamersley will be Jody Adams of Rialto, Andy Husbands of Tremont 647 and Sister Sorel, Barry Maiden of Hungry Mother, and Richard Vellante of Legal Sea Foods, Inc.   Reception is hosted by Stella Artois, Heogaarden, and Leffe.  $250 per person.  To purchase tickets, log on to www.strength.org, and click on “A Tasteful Pursuit.”
