  • Wednesday, October 21, 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm – Growing Strawberries in New England Webinar

    Strawberries are one of the most loved fruits to grow in a home garden, especially for families with small children. On Wednesday, October 21 at 6:30 pm, we’ll go over some of the important elements of how to be successful in pursuit of the perfect strawberry harvest; site, soil, nutrition requirements, innovative planting ideas and pest/disease management. This program will be held virtually. Once you register for this Tower Hill Botanic Garden webinar you will receive a Zoom link in the confirmation.     Sonia Schloemann trained in Plant and Soil Sciences at UMass with both Bachelors and Masters degrees. She worked for UMass Extension for over 30 years as a Small Fruit Specialist, delivering educational programming to commercial growers and conducting research on sustainable practices for commercial fruit production. She has conducted Master Gardener trainings for over 20 years. She lives and garden in Amherst, MA.

  • Sunday, July 9, 10:30 am – 12:00 noon – Strawberry Bed Rejuvenation

    Old strawberry bed not so productive as you’d like? Always wanted a strawberry bed but don’t know where to begin?

    Visit Hannah Traggis at The Gardens at Elm Bank’s Seed to Table Garden, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley on Sunday, July 9 beginning at 10:30 am to learn how create new or rejuvenate old strawberry beds, and a simple technique to propagate new plants from old ones. Basic strawberry plant health and care will be discussed and you will get to practice your new technique and take a few plants home for your own garden.

    Hannah Traggis manages Mass Hort’s edible gardens throughout The Gardens at Elm Bank. She oversees the Seed to Table vegetable garden which produces more than 4,000 pounds of produce each year to support our educational mission and local food pantries.   • Thursday, November 19, 7:00 pm – Berry Basics

    John Howell, former horticulturist at UMass Extension, will speak to the North Quabbin Garden Club on Thursday, November 19 at the Millers River Environmental Center, 100 Main Street in Athol, on the basics of growing strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries.  Free, and the public is invited to attend.

  • Saturday, June 8, 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm – Talk and Taste: Cooking with Strawberries

    Tufts University, in partnership with the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, will present Talk and Taste: Cooking with Strawberries, a lecture on the health benefits of strawberries, preparation of berry salad (wheatberries, strawberries and balsamic), gardening tips, and tasting, on Saturday, June 8, from 2 – 3:30 at the Jean Mayer USDA HNRCA at Tufts University, Mezzanine Level, 711 Washington Street in Boston.  Registration is limited to 70 people on EventBrite (search for Talk and Taste).  The event features Dr. Barbara Shukitt-Hale, Research Psychologist, USDA, Tim Nourse of Nourse Berry Farms in Whately, Massachusetts, and Rolando Robledo, Chef at Clover Food Lab in Boston.  Event includes a prize drawing.

  • Sunday, March 11, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Organic Berry Growing in the Home Garden

    Want to learn how to grow the fruits your family loves? Strawberries, blueberries and raspberries are delicious and nutritious, and beloved by kids of all ages. This Tower Hill Botanic Garden course on Sunday, March 11 from 1 – 4 will cover: variety selection, planting site recommendations, soil and nutrient needs planting, spacing, mulching, pest control strategies, structural considerations (containers, netting, frames, etc.) and pruning/thinning.

    Patti Powers has been growing small fruits organically since 1978, first at her farm in Western Massachusetts, and for 26 years at Cheshire Garden in Winchester, NH. She studied Plant and Soil Science and Botany at UMass, and worked for 10 years as a researcher in the UMass Entomology Department studying insect behavior. THBG member price is $30, nonmembers $35.   • Saturday, June 19, 12:00 noon – 4:00 pm – Strawberry Festival

    Celebrate the local strawberry season on Saturday, June 19, from noon – 4, at Verrill Farm, 11 Wheeler Road in Concord.  Food will be served a la cart, with strawberry shortcake made from scratch in the farm stand kitchen, plus hot dogs, hamburgers, and beverages.  There will be live music by Southern Rail, Giddy Up Pony rides, and hayrides.  For more information, log on to www.verrillfarm.com.

  • Saturday, June 19, 10:00 am – Strawberry Festival

    Land’s Sake Farm, 90 Wellesley Street, Weston, MA is the place to be on Saturday, June 19, beginning at 10 am, for its Annual Strawberry Festival.  Please come for pick-your-own berries, summertime food including strawberry shortcake, live music, tractor rides, and many farm games and activities for children.  Land’s Sake strawberries are grown without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilizers.  Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for children, and children under 2 and Land’s Sake members are free.  Call 781-893-1162 for more information.
