Saturday, April 21 – The 14th Annual Great Gardens & Landscaping Symposium

The 14th Annual Great Gardens & Landscaping Symposium will take place Saturday, April 21 at The Woodstock Inn & Resort in Woodstock, Vermont. The symposium features:

Five info-packed lectures led by nationally and regionally renowned professionals in their fields. Dr. Leonard Perry, Horticulture Professor Emeritus from the University of Vermont will speak on Top Flowers and Vegetables for Northern Gardens, and Gardening in a Changing Climate. Katherine Tracey of Avant Gardens will present Succulent Love. Valerie Rollins of Four Star Greenhouse will Discover the Magic Behind Growing Great Herbs, and Kerry Ann Mendez of Perennially Yours will speak on New and Unusual Perennials, Flowering Shrubs, and Annuals.

A Gardeners Marketplace runs all day with plant vendors, artisans, gardening gifts and products. Terrific handouts, door prizes and garden gifts for everyone!

Thursday, January 18, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Grow Your Own Succulent Container

Come to The Gardens at Elm Bank (Parkman Room) on Thursday, January 18 from 7 – 8:30 for a fun evening and learn what you need to know to maintain a container planting of succulents. Carrie Waterman will bring a selection of plants to show the diversity of succulent plants. She will discuss the best species to keep in containers and how to care and propagate your own succulents. Afterward, Barb Rietscha of Stow Greenhouses will provide materials so every student can create a long-lasting, low-maintenance garden. Must pre-register at www.masshort.org. Saturday, September 16 and Sunday, September 17, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm – 11th Annual Cactus and Succulent Society of Massachusetts Show

The CSSM’s annual plant show is a fantastic event! Here you will see many of the finest cacti and succulent plant specimens in New England. The world of cacti and succulent plants includes many rare, bizarre, and stunning specimens. Few people have seen the full breadth of this strange yet beautiful world.
The selection of C&S plants on display at this event is the best you will find in Massachusetts. This year the show will take place September 16 and 17 at the Norfolk Public Library, 1 Liberty Lane in Norfolk, from 9 – 4 each day. Thursday, January 26, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Growing Container Succulents

The Massachusetts Horticultural Society will hold a class taught by Carrie Waterman on Container Succulents on Thursday, January 26 from 7 – 8:30 in the Parkman Room of the Education Building at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley.  She will bring a selection of succulents to show the range of these special plants.  She will also discuss the best species to keep in containers and how to care for and propagate your own succulents.  $12 for Mass Hort members, $20 for nonmembers.  Register online at www.masshort.org.  Image from www.armstronggarden.com.


Saturday, January 28, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm – Growing Succulents: Agave and Aeoniums

Join plantsman Rob Gennari of Glendale Botanicals at Berkshire Botanical Garden on Saturday, January 28 at 1 pm for a focused look at growing and overwintering succulents, agaves, and aeoniums indoors. Come warmer weather, this great group of plants make a special statement on a terrace or patio in the summer, but how do these stately specimens make it through winter in the indoor setting? Learn what varieties and cultivars are best for overwintering, how to care for these plants, where to situate them, and seasonal tips for watering and fertilization. After a transplanting demonstration (an art all of its own when dealing with sharp-tipped agaves), participants will go home with a few treasures to grow on.

Friday, October 21, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Succulents

Carol Govan talks about the connections among related plants and how they express their genetic heritage in response to their environments in this Friday, October 21 lecture and greenhouse walk at the Wellesley College Botanic Gardens, beginning at 10 am. Succulents have adapted to habitats that experience temporary drought. Observe the amazing forms, thick, fleshy leaves, stems and branches that help several plant families survive in this unforgiving environment. See Wellesley’s succulent collection, especially those from the cactus family, the most well known succulent.  Friends of Wellesley College Botanic Gardens free, nonmembers $10. Saturday & Sunday, September 17 & 18, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm – 10th Annual Cactus and Succulent Show

The Cactus and Succulent Society of Massachusetts will sponsor its 10th Annual Cactus and Succulent Show on September 17 and 18, from 9 – 4 at the Norfolk Public Library, 1 Liberty Lane in Norfolk. Sunday, January 10, 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm – Succulent Gardens

Learn how to make and care for a beautiful succulent garden on Sunday, January 10 from 3 – 5 at The KITCHEN at Boston Public Market. Students will be able to able to choose from a variety of succulents to create a long lasting, low maintenance garden. The Trustees of Reservations class, led by Barb Rietscha, owner of Stow Greenhouses, will also teach the proper care of succulents. All materials are included. TTOR members $36, nonmembers $45. Thursday, December 12, 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm – Succulent Dish Garden Workshop

As part of its Festival of Trees Celebration Mass Hort is offering this hands-on workshop on Thursday, December 12, from 7 – 9 at Elm Bank, to create a succulent dish garden to give as a gift or to keep for your own home.

Your succulent dish garden will be planted in a twelve inch Italian terra cotta container with South African succulents. Art Scarpa has been growing cacti and succulents since he was a boy and is an expert on their care. Art will provide you with all the information you need to care for your garden year round in a fun and informative presentation. Workshop fee includes plants, soil, container, top-dressing, and hand selected decorative stones. All tools will be provided.

Art Scarpa, known for his expertise in growing succulents and for his love for unusual plants, is certified as a judge by the Cactus and Succulent Society of America and has competed and judged at numerous major shows, including Boston, Newport and Philadelphia and many regional cactus and succulent shows. Art is also a 2013 Mass Hort Gold Medal recipient.
