  • Wednesday, March 31, 12:00 noon – 1:00 pm – Foliage & Focal Points: Ideas for Budgets and Gardens of All Sizes, Online

We all have sections of our garden that we are less than satisfied with, yet understanding what has gone wrong can be frustrating. Instinct sends us shopping for more plants and we typically gravitate towards whatever is blooming that day in the hope that the injection of fresh color will solve the problem. Yet as we add in these new treasures, the sense of dissatisfaction quickly grows, especially when the flowers finish blooming and we are left with a muddled sea of nondescript leaves.

In this March 31 Ecological Landscape Alliance free presentation, Karen Chapman will explain the importance of establishing focal points, a key component of good garden design, and analyze three areas where they play an important role. This presentation will explore the use of containers, structures, water features, and artistic sculptural elements as focal points and discuss how to frame and enhance these with interesting foliage to create a memorable vignette.

With ideas for budgets and gardens of all sizes, you will quickly gain the confidence and knowledge to transform your own landscape into a cohesive series of eye-catching scenes.

At the Karen Chapman’s request, no recording will be available for this presentation. Free, but registration required at www.ecolandscaping.org

Karen Chapman was born in England and grew up with a trowel in her hand. After moving to the Pacific Northwest in 1996 she joined one of the leading nurseries as a garden plant specialist. Ten years later she established Le jardinet, a custom landscape design company specializing in creating artistic plant combinations with a four-season foliage framework, functional outdoor living spaces, and deer-resistant designs.
Karen teaches both container and landscape design in workshops and seminars across the country as well offering a range of online learning opportunities.
When she’s not teaching garden design Karen is usually writing about it, her articles and designs being featured in many national gardening publications including Fine Gardening, Country Gardens, Sunset, and Garden Design magazines. She has co-authored two books: the award-winning Fine Foliage (St. Lynn’s Press, 2013) and the highly acclaimed Gardening with Foliage First (Timber Press, 2017) while her latest book, Deer Resistant Design: Gardens that Thrive Despite the Deer was released in 2019 (Timber Press) much to the relief of deer-challenged gardeners nationwide.

  • Saturday, October 7, 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm – Fall for Local: Floral Workshop with Little State Flower Farm

There are few things more indicative of the change of the seasons than the shifting colors and textures of the leaves, flowers and trees surrounding us. Join Jill Rizzo of Studio Choo East and Anna Jane Kocon of Little State Flower Company for a collaborative floral design workshop focusing on bringing the fleeting beauty of autumn into your home. The class will take place at Tower Hill Botanic Garden on Saturday, October 7, from 1:30 – 3:30. We’ll start with a show-and-tell on the basics: selection, flower care, cleaning and seasonality. We’ll discuss the selected color palette and our favorite ways to tweak traditional autumn hues. The arranging demonstration will focus on combining gestural branches and foliage to make a unique structural base, then we’ll show you how to layer and nestle your favorite blooms for a composition that is full of movement and air. Workshop cost ($165 for Tower Hill members, $175 for nonmembers) includes all materials for students to take home (flowers and vessel). Floral snips will be provided for use during the workshop but students are encouraged to bring their own. Register online at www.towerhillbg.org.

Jill Rizzo is the owner of Studio Choo East, founded in 2009 in San Francisco with best friend Alethea Harampolis. In 2015, she opened a New England branch of the studio focused on creating uniquely wild floral designs for weekly clients, weddings, and workshops. Co-author of The Flower Recipe Book and
Branches and Blooms, her work has been featured in Martha Stewart Weddings, Real Simple, Veranda and Sunset.

Anna Jane Kocon is the founder and owner of Little State Flower Company; a five acre specialty-cut flower farm based on Aquidneck Island in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. • Thursday, July 12, 6:00 pm -9:00 pm (rain date Thursday, July 19) – 14th Annual Lantern Festival

Join The Friends of Forest Hills Educational Trust on Thursday, July 12 from 6 – 9 pm (rain date Thursday, July 19) for a moving memorial ceremony inspired by Buddhist rituals. Inscribe a lantern with a personal message to friends or family and float it across Lake Hibiscus at sunset. Bring a family picnic.  Enjoy Grand Master Tsuji’s Samurai Taiko drummers, gospel music by Ron Murphy, Irish music by guitar/fiddle duo The Whiskey Boys, and traditional Japanese dance by students of Showa Institute. Photo below by JM Lobert at www.flickeflu.com.

In this breathtaking ceremony of remembrance, visitors to this lush, Victorian landscape make paper lanterns and set them afloat on the peaceful waters of a small lake. This ritual is based on the traditional Japanese Bon Festival, a time when a door opens to the world of the ancestors, allowing us to send messages to the other side. People enjoy picnics on the grass and a multi-cultural program of music and dance. They decorate their lanterns with calligraphy and notes to those who have died. At sunset, a candle is lit in each lantern, and the glimmering lanterns are set afloat. Drifting and flickering with the wind, the lanterns symbolize the soul’s journey when life ends.  Admission is free, with a $10 donation per lantern. Parking is $10, and people are encouraged to take the T.  No lighting after dark, so bring a flashlight to assist your departure.  For more information, log on to www.foresthillstrust.org.
