Urban farming is taking off in some of the most densely populated places around Greater Boston in interesting, unexpected ways. Learn about the ever-changing landscape of growing technologies that is making this possible and how to apply these techniques at home or in your community. Jessie Banhazl, CEO and founder of Green City Growers, will join The Garden Club of the Back Bay at The College Club, 44 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, on Wednesday, February 11 at 10 am for this informative talk. Green City Growers are experienced and passionate organic urban farmers who specialize in year-round raised bed urban farms for yards, rooftops, decks, and unused lots. They maintain production-level urban farms for hotels, grocers, and restaurants, and pioneer farming education programs for businesses, municipalities, homeowners and schools. Garden Club of the Back Bay members will receive written notice of this meeting. If you are not a member but are interested in attending, please email info@bostonflora.com.

Wednesday, February 6, 10:00 am – Colonial Gardens of America
On Wednesday, February 6, 10:00 am, Betsy Grecoe will speak to The Garden Club of the Back Bay on the topic Colonial Gardens of America. The meeting will take place at The College Club, 44 Commonwealth Avenue, in Boston.
This Colonial Garden program is a PowerPoint presentation with explanation about the early gardens and the gardens of the wealthy and merchant class during the colonial time period, stressing the designs and philosophy behind their choices. Included is a discussion of some of the plants that were chosen at that time. Ms. Grecoe will then discuss naturalistic gardening, a change in gardening brought on in part by the American Revolution and our presidential gardeners, Washington, Adams and Jefferson. She will describe the various forms of garden restoration possible and suggest sources of information for anyone wishing to reproduce a colonial garden. Our speaker was vice-president of the Tewksbury Garden Club and has traveled extensively in the United States, taking thousands of pictures and never missing the chance to see an historic garden. The meeting is free to Garden Club of the Back Bay and College Club of Boston members, and a $5 donation is requested from the general public. An optional lunch ($20) will follow the meeting. If you are a Garden Club member you will receive a written notification. If you are not a member and wish to attend, email info@bostonflora.com so we may put your name on the list.

Wednesday, May 5, 10:00 am – Backyard Biodiversity: Conservation Biology for the Landowner
We are all responsible for the species that share the space we own or maintain, and our management decisions can have severe consequences for these species, and hence for the health of our communities. Richard Enser will speak on Backyard Biodiversity: Conservation Biology for the Landowner at the May meeting of The Garden Club of the Back Bay beginning at 10 am at The College Club, 44 Commonwealth Avenue in Boston. Rick will suggest things we can do and things we should stop doing to better manage our land for the promotion of native biodiversity. Richard Enser developed this talk based on his 30 year experience with the Rhode Island Natural Heritage Program. He retired from that position and moved to Vermont in 2006, and now offers his services as a consultant on biodiversity issues, especially to landowners on how to manage their properties in ways that are most beneficial to preserving biodiversity. An optional lunch ($19) with our speaker will follow the meeting, but pre-registration is essential. Garden Club members will receive a written notice of the meeting, but the public may attend by contacting info@bostonflora.com. The Club will respond with registration instructions. Photo below by Richard Enser.

Wednesday, February 24, 10:00 am – Should I Become An Organic Gardener?
The February meeting of the Garden Club of the Back Bay will take place Wednesday, February 24, beginning at 10 am, at The College Club, 44 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston. Dianne Plantamura has been an organic gardener for over 30 years, and shares her training as a Master Gardener in this presentation on the benefits, costs and challenges of gardening organically. Dianne’s first memory in life was sitting at age 3 or 4 in the warm soil of her grandfather’s truck garden. Raised on the now celebrated Mediterranean cuisine, she has always been interested in tasty and nutritious food, a synonym for organically raised food. She will tell us why she considers organic methods crucial for human health and for the well being of the earth. In addition to her work as a Master Gardener with the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, Dianne is an officer in the Groveland Garden Club and works as Executive Director of the New England College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. The meeting is free and open to the public. An optional vegetarian, organic lunch will follow the meeting at a cost of $20 per person, and pre-registration is essential. You may sign up by emailing info@bostonflora.com.
