  • Sunday, December 17, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Holiday Open House at The Gibson House

The Gibson House Museum is the only house museum in Back Bay. Since 1957, it has told the story of the Gibson family’s daily life during the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries through their everyday possessions, decorative objects, and furnishings. On Sunday, December 17, from 1 – 4, the house will be decorated for the holidays as it would have been decorated when the Gibsons were in residence. This year, we have two new, historically appropriate trees: a tabletop goose-feather tree and an eight-foot Noble Fir with LED candles that give a sense of what lit wax candles were like during the Gibsons’ time. Light seasonal refreshments will be served. For more information visit www.thegibsonhouse.org. No reservations necessary!

  • Tuesday, August 25, 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm – Elements of the Victorian Table, A Virtual Program

The Victorians used a lot of tableware for their meals, often much more than we do today. Etiquetteer Robert B. Dimmick and Gibson House Museum Curator Meghan Gelardi Holmes will use the museum’s collection to set an everyday table in the Gibson House dining room, highlighting things we don’t often use today. Sharing information about Victorian table manners and menus, they’ll explore the dining habits of the Gibson and Warren families and the roles played by servants. The virtual program is $10 for members of the Museum, $12 for nonmembers, and pre-registration is required at https://www.thegibsonhouse.org/events.html

From the Archives – An Afternoon in Victorian Boston

On a Saturday in May, 1980, The Garden Club of the Back Bay invited the public to An Afternoon in Victorian Boston, a tour of houses covering living styles from 1880 to 1980.  The first house on the itinerary was, of course, The Gibson House, a living Victorian Museum, with additional access to the garden of late Treasurer Irene Pitz.  Then participants were to walk to a contemporary home, roof garden and famous “Bagel Garden” of the SWA Group, Landscape Architects, followed by a peek at the first floor and conservatory of the Webster-Ames Mansion and tea on the Mall.  The proceeds were allocated to the restoration of the interior courtyard of the Boston Public Library.  The extraordinary price of this afternoon was $5.
