  • Monday, October 14, 10:45 am – 3:00 pm – Christopher Columbus Day Celebration at Christopher Columbus Park

    The Friends of Christopher Columbus Park continues its tradition of marking Christopher Columbus’ arrival in America with a free celebration to be held Monday, October 14 from 10L45 am – 3 pm.  Events will kick off with the annual Kids Parade, where kids of all ages are invited to bring their decorated bikes, scooters, or strollers at 10L45 for a promenade through the Park.  At the conclusion of the parade there will be a short ceremony at the Christopher Columbus statue, including a wreath laying ceremony led by Mayor Thomas Menino and Italian Deputy Consul Luigi Munno.

    Entertainment through the day will include performances by Jenny the Juggler, Peter O’Malley the Magician, Boris the Pennyfarthing Bicyclist and T-Bone the Interactive Pied Piper, as well as readings by Eliot School students and a patriotic musical performance by the North End Music & Performing Arts Center.  Other activities include face painting, a crafts table, lawn games with prizes, and tours of a real working fire truck.  For complete details visit www.foccp.org.

  • Monday, January 30, 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Rezoning for Urban Agriculture

    Mayor Thomas M. Menino, the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA), and the Mayor’s Office of Food Initiatives are launching a new project to update the Boston Zoning Code to support Urban Agriculture (UA) city wide. UA is small scale farming that makes healthy, fresh food more accessible and empowers Bostonians by creating economic opportunity. Examples of urban farming include rooftop greenhouse agriculture, aquaponics (fish farming), community farms, farm stands, composting, and other fresh food-producing endeavors. The kickoff and “visioning” meeting will take place Monday, January 30, from 6 – 8:30 pm at Suffolk University, 73 Tremont Street, 9th floor. The keynote speaker is Will Allen, Founder and CEO of Growing Power Inc. Will is a former pro athlete and 2008 McArthur Foundation Genius Grant recipient for his work on urban farming and sustainable food productions.

    The Friends of Copley Square and Mayor Thomas M. Menino invite you and your family to attend the annual Copley Square Holiday Tree Lighting Festivities on Tuesday, November 29, from 3:00 – 6:00 pm, with WHDH’s Janet Wu.  At 3:00, there will be a Story Hour and Candy Cane Tea at the Boston Public Library, sponsored by the BPL and by Catered Affair (rsvp by November 25 at 617-859-2282), and be sure to bring your little ones for a Parade of Festively Decorated Carriages.  The actual tree lighting will take place at 5:00,with lights courtesy of Normandy RE Partners and Boston Properties,  and there will be a post lighting reception at the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel.  Bring a can and support Boston Can Share.
