  • Massachusetts Agricultural Fair Schedule for August – October, 2014

Grange and 4-H Fairs are, some will say, the quintessential American summer activity, and if you city folk haven’t experienced going to one, we suggest you put one of the following fairs (listed alphabetically by town – those with websites are highlighted in red, just click to link) on your calendar right now.  Generally, admission is free, often there is an auction of prize winning vegetables, flowers, pies and preserves at the end of the show, or check out the bake sale, and enjoy yourself in the “country.”  This is by no means an exhaustive list – for that, visit http://www.mass.gov/agr/massgrown/docs/fairs-directory.pdf.

  • Wednesday, July 24, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm – Wetland Plant and Community ID

The Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary will sponsor a Wetland Plant and Community ID session on Wednesday, July 24 beginning at 9 am at the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary at 87 Perkins Row in Topsfield, led by Director Carol Decker. Wetlands are areas that are dominated by water and water-tolerant plants. The most common method of identifying these areas is by the unique plant communities that grow in them. Spend the day exploring the wetland communities of the sanctuary, from the shrub swamps to the wet meadows and marshes. Plant identification will be emphasized. This workshop is ideal for anyone interested in learning more about wetland plant communities as well as conservation commissioners. Meet on the back porch of the Visitor Center. Bring a lunch, beverage, and drinking water. Registration (IRWS members $32, nonmembers $41) is required. Register online at https://www.massaudubon.org/Nature_Connection/Sanctuaries/Ipswich_River/index.php or call 978-887-9264 to register by phone.

  • Saturday, September 12, 7 a.m. – Ride for Green 2009

The Ride for Green, sponsored by The Trustees of Reservations, is a one-day, 125-mile cycling event dedicated to protecting Massachusetts’ natural landscapes and preserving the health and well-being of our communities through local green initiatives.  One-hundred percent of the proceeds raised through the Ride will go toward The Trustees of Reservations’ land conservation fund so that special places throughout Massachusetts can be protected and preserved for everyone, forever. In Massachusetts, more than 1 million acres of land are in urgent need of protection — together we can change this.

If you are an avid cyclist who loves the outdoors and you are passionate about protecting our natural landscapes, then please join The Trustees on September 12th. Together we will inspire a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future.  The 125 mile, point to point ride begins in Cohasset and travels through Norwell and Sharon before turning north through Dover, Wellesley, Weston and Concord.  It then heads northeast through Tewksbury, Andover, and Topsfield before finishing at Appleton Farms in Ipswich.  The Ride will pass by several historic sites, including Walden Pond, the Old Manse (Emerson’s former home), and the Old North Bridge.  Cyclists will ride by more than eight Trustees of Reservations properties along the way.  There will be two aid stations on the route to restock and refuel. The ride will finish with a BBQ, beer, and music at Appleton Farms in Ipswich.  We expect over 250 Trustees members and other leaders in conservation at the post ride party to welcome riders and celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Trustees’ Conservation Council.  Families are encouraged to attend the post-ride celebration.  For more information log on to www.thetrustees.org.
